Hero: The Boy from Troy

The Story of Young John Lewis

Book by Nambi E. Kelley, Music and Lyrics by Joe Plummer

Gallery of Heroes newest offering HERO: THE BOY FROM TROY tells the story of a young John Lewis and how his heroes in the Civil Rights movement inspired him to protest injustice and get into ‘good trouble.’

John Lewis’s story is told as a musical journey through the decades; joined by his faithful congregation of chickens, he meets his heroes Rosa Parks and Dr. King and learns how he too can take a stand. Raising chickens as a boy on his family’s farm, John dreams of being a preacher when he sees how ministers like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. can fight for what is right. On a harrowing road trip through the South with his Uncle Otis, John’s eyes and mind are opened to the injustices of segregation and racism that must be fought – but how? Questions are raised, good trouble is found…what answers will you and your students take away?

The play is preceded with spoken word and poetry by Haley Clancy and songs performed by Hope Anthony.
