Learn about the build up to and first battle of the Civil War at Fort Sumter in April of 1861.  We will discuss the surprisingly bloodless battle that inaugurated the bloodiest war in American history, and how the city of Charleston and Fort Sumter became a target for Union forces for the remainder of the war.

Mark Maloy has a Master’s degree in History and has worked for the National Park Service for more than ten years.  He began his career with the Park Service as an intern at Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park in Charleston, South Carolina.  He is the author of “Victory or Death: The Battles of Trenton and Princeton” and he is currently working on a second book about Revolutionary War Charleston for the Emerging Revolutionary War Series.

2nd Saturday Lectures made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.
Free and open to the public. No reservations required.
