Pittsburgh Jazz Tradition Combined with Contemporary Style
Tony Campbell was the youngest saxophone player inducted into the Pittsburgh Jazz Society’s Hall of Fame in 2010. His musical journey began in the Hill District of Pittsburgh in 1973. At the age of 13, Tony joined a band called The Deltones. In 1979, he attended Berklee College of Music, returning to Pittsburgh in 1982, where he enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh under Dr. Nathan Davis. At 22, he recorded and toured with Roy Ayers. Later that year, he joined Roger Humphries + RH Factor.
In 1990, Tony moved to New York City and landed a 16-week U.S. tour with Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Ladies,” serving as the lead alto player in a 10-piece orchestra.
From 1993 to 2000, Tony took his talents to cruise ships as a lead alto player and musical director, performing with notable artists such as Ben Vereen, Marvin Hamlisch, Jack Jones, Diahann Carroll, Maureen McGovern, Neil Sedaka, Phyllis Diller, and many others.
In 2000, Tony returned home, began teaching, and rejoined the Roger Humphries Big Band as the lead alto player. He also started his own band, Tony Campbell and Jazzsurgery. In 2005, he recorded his first CD as a bandleader, titled “T.C.B. II: Taking Care of Business.” He was part of the Poogie Bell band from 2005 until 2009, and later taught music at the middle and high school levels until 2013. His second CD, “Eastside,” was released in 2013 and features acclaimed Pittsburgh musicians, including Sean Jones, Roger Humphries, and Dwayne Dolphin.
Currently, Tony is active in performing, recording, producing, teaching, and leading jazz jam sessions showcasing some of the Pittsburgh region’s finest up-and-coming talent. His mission is to keep the great American jazz tradition alive so that everyone can enjoy and experience it as deeply as he does.
