Animals of America: Environmental writers Andrew Moore & Jason Bittel in conversation with Char Ross

Join environmental writers Andrew Moore (The Beasts of the East: The Fall and Rise of America’s Eastern Wilderness and Pawpaw: In Search of America’s Forgotten Fruit) and Jason Bittel (Grizzled: Love Letters to 50 of North America’s Least Understood Animals) for a lively conversation about wildlife, ecosystems, and the role of humans in both threatening and protecting them.

In conversation with Master Naturalist and environmental educator Char Ross, Andrew and Jason will explore the consequences of human development of the wilds of North America, consider the efforts to restore once-thriving ecosystems, and celebrate the incredible diversity of the fascinating animal species who share our continent.

Andrew Moore is a writer, journalist, and public speaker. His new book, The Beasts of the East: The Fall and Rise of America’s Eastern Wilderness, will be published by Mariner Books on June 2nd, 2026. He is also the author of Pawpaw: In Search of America’s Forgotten Fruit, a James Beard Foundation Award finalist in Writing & Literature. His work has appeared in the Washington Post, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and The Daily Yonder. He lives in Pittsburgh.

Jason Bittel is a National Geographic Society Explorer and Knight Science Journalism Project Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to writing for adult readers at National Geographic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Popular Science Magazine, New Scientist Magazine, and elsewhere, he has published four kids’ books: Mountain: Go On a Grand Tour of the Highest Places on Earth (2024), The Frozen Worlds (2023), Animals Lost And Found (2022) and How To Talk To A Tiger…And Other Animals: How Critters Communicate In The Wild (2021). Grizzled: Love Letters to 50 of North America’s Least Understood Animals, was published on March 3, 2026.

Char Ross is a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist, a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Educators, an educator at Frick Environmental Center, and a Resident Naturalist at Discovery School Day Camp.
