Completing the Carnegie Carnegie: The Music Hall

“One of Carnegie Borough’s star amenities, large regional audiences are drawn to the Music Hall each year for a variety of artistic and cultural performances. This historical landmark contributes to our community’s vibrancy and the advancement of the borough’s Municipal Plan with extraordinary programming that demonstrates incredible versatility that connects us to the world and each other.” – Phil Boyd, Carnegie Borough Council President

History

Carnegie Borough was incorporated in 1894, with the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall established as Andrew Carnegie’s legacy gift to the new town named in his honor. The Carnegie Carnegie opened its doors on May 1, 1901, and has been in continuous operation, serving Carnegie and its surrounding communities, since that day.

Over the past 20 years, the board and staff of the Carnegie Carnegie have worked to restore this National Historic Landmark, ensuring it remains a treasured and beloved community asset. Much of the building has been meticulously restored and updated with modern amenities while still maintaining its historic charm and relevance. The Music Hall is the final piece in completing the Carnegie Carnegie.

Current Activities

During Spring & Summer 2025, the Music Hall will close to undergo its first big transformation as a new HVAC system is installed – a significant part of the overall restoration effort. This new system will improve air quality in the Music Hall, bringing it up to speed with the highest modern standards for theater venues. With advanced ventilation systems and air purification technology, this project will enhance comfort and ensure a healthier, more enjoyable experience for performers and guests without impacting the architectural beauty and cultural significance of the space.

Beyond this work, fundraising will continue to secure the remaining $1.5 million needed to complete the restoration, which will include updating the electrical system; repairing deteriorating plaster and repainting; replacing the 120-year-old stage floor; replacing balcony seating with comfortable, functional seats; and upgrading the current sound system.

Completing this work will not only serve the greater Carnegie community by enhancing a beloved cultural asset, but it will also provide more dedicated support for local performing arts organizations, artists, and musicians while increasing Music Hall revenue and ultimately creating a more financially sustainable venue.
