The Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall in Carnegie has brought on an intern to focus on social work.

Matthew Loughran said he is excited to start in the position of Social Work Intern at the library. He is working toward a Master’s in Social Work (MSW) degree at the University of Pittsburgh.

“I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, growing up in the South Hills. For the past six years, I’ve been in Cleveland, where I attended John Carroll University and earned my degree in political science and peace, justice, and human rights,” he said. “After graduation, I stayed in Cleveland to work as a case manager at an outpatient mental health clinic. It was in this role that I discovered my passion for working with people from all walks of life, helping them achieve stability, independence, and a fulfilling life.”

Returning to Pittsburgh was an exciting decision, he said, and not just because he’s a die-hard Steelers fan and needed a break from all the Browns fans. More importantly, he wanted to continue his education and build on his ability to help others navigate the challenges they face, both big and small.

“I’m new to the social service landscape in Pittsburgh and am still learning about the resources available here. As I settle into this role, I appreciate your patience and understanding,” he said. “While I may not always have the answers right away, I can promise that I will work hard to find the information you need or connect you with someone who can assist you.”

Loughran said he’s eager to learn from the community and to bring his commitment to helping others into his new role at the library.

“I understand that seeking help can feel overwhelming, so I’m here to guide you through the resources available and offer personalized support. Whether you’re facing immediate concerns or looking for long-term solutions, I’m here to assist,” he said.

Loughran is available to assist with a wide range of needs, including: housing, mental health, employment and job search, finances, child care, crisis intervention, accessing community resources, navigating social services, elder care resources and more.

Loughran is available to meet with patrons during the following hours:

• Wednesdays and Thursdays: noon to 4 p.m.

• Saturdays: 1 to 3 p.m.

You can reach Loughran by email at loughranm@carnegiecarnegie.org or by phone at 412-444-8833 with any questions or to set up an in-person appointment.

“I’m passionate about serving the community and ensuring everyone has access to the resources they need,” he said. “Whether you’re looking for specific assistance or just need someone to talk to, I’m here to help and look forward to meeting with you.”
