Revisiting Pittsburgh’s Orphanages: An author visit

March 25, 2023 @ 11:00 am 12:00 pm

In the early 1900s, orphanages in the United States housed more than 100,000 children, thousands of those living in Pittsburgh. The research for this rich history is shared through a mosaic of images in the new book: Pittsburgh’s Orphans and Orphanages, showing the many buildings that gave young orphans a place to call home for decades. Their stories remain an important piece of Pittsburgh’s history.

Authors Joann Cantrell and James Wudarczyk will discuss their book and the research done on the orphanages in the Pittsburgh region. Joann Cantrell is an award-winning local journalist and author of three books for the Arcadia Publishing Images of America series that celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns and cities across the country. She has also authored a book on infant loss: Carried Within Me – Echoes of Infant Loss published by Lighthouse Point Press, Pittsburgh. James Wudarczyk is a local historian and long time member of the Lawrenceville Historical Society, as well as the author of two of Arcadia’s Images of America series and numerous history books.
