On the cusp of the Centennial of the end of the War to End All Wars Tom Roberts and the Allegheny City Ragtime Orchestra perform “A Tribute to James Reese Europe and the Harlem Hellfighters”
Dubbed the “Harlem Hellfighters” by German foes, the African American 369th Infantry Regiment spent more time in front line trenches, and suffered more casualties than any other American unit.
The Harlem Hellfighters were as renowned for their musicianship as their battlefield prowess. Arranger, composer, union organizer, and Army National Guard Lieutenant, James Reese Europe led his band to Carnegie Hall and on the Western Front. Europe played an extraordinary role in introducing jazz to both New York and the European continent.
