Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz Series – James Johnson III

June 4 @ 7:00 pm

Drummer, composer, and bandleader James Johnson III returns to the Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz Series with an evening of dynamic, forward-thinking jazz.

A Pittsburgh native, Johnson began playing drums at age five and later studied at the city’s High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA), where he was mentored by legendary jazz drummer Roger Humphries. That early foundation led to an international performing career, including years touring with the acclaimed pianist Ahmad Jamal and appearances at major venues and festivals around the world.

Equally comfortable as a collaborator and bandleader, Johnson has shared the stage with many of jazz’s most respected artists, including George Coleman, Geri Allen, Benny Golson, and Kenny Garrett. His music blends strong melodic writing with the spontaneity of improvisation, creating performances that feel both deeply rooted in jazz tradition and strikingly contemporary.

For this performance, Johnson brings together an ensemble of exceptional musicians for a night of original compositions and inventive interpretations in the intimate setting of the Carnegie Carnegie Studio.
