Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz – Colter Harper Trio

May 21 @ 7:00 pm

The Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz Series brings outstanding jazz artists to the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall’s Studio for up close performances in a relaxed, welcoming setting. From classic swing and soul infused jazz to modern grooves and adventurous ensembles, the series highlights the breadth of the jazz tradition while keeping the experience personal, intimate, and accessible.

Colter Harper is a guitarist, composer, and a longtime presence in Pittsburgh jazz. His work bridges the jazz tradition with global influences drawn from his time studying and performing in West Africa, Brazil, and Europe.

Harper is the author of Jazz in the Hill: Nightlife and Narratives of a Pittsburgh Neighborhood (University Press of Mississippi, 2024), a history of jazz in the Hill District. He completed a PhD in ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh and a Fulbright scholarship in Ghana. He currently teaches at the University at Buffalo.

For this Studio Jazz Series performance, Harper brings together a top-shelf Pittsburgh trio with Jeff Grubbs on bass (of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra) and Dave Throckmorton on drums. Vocalist Kelsey Jumper joins the group as a special guest on selected numbers. The evening features Colter’s original compositions, music by the Brazilian songwriter Caetano Veloso, along with choice standards.
