Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz – Colter Harper

May 21 @ 7:00 pm

The Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz Series brings outstanding jazz artists to the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall’s Studio for up close performances in a relaxed, welcoming setting. From classic swing and soul infused jazz to modern grooves and adventurous ensembles, the series highlights the breadth of the jazz tradition while keeping the experience personal, intimate, and accessible.

Colter Harper is a guitarist, composer, and Pittsburgh native whose work bridges jazz tradition with global influences. A versatile performer, Harper has spent years performing and recording across a wide range of musical settings, from jazz ensembles to internationally touring bands.

In addition to his work as a bandleader, Harper spent several years as a guitarist, percussionist, and vocalist with the multi-platinum band Rusted Root, touring nationally and recording on the group’s albums Stereo Rodeo and The Movement. His own recordings—including Under a Quiet Sun, Once Upon a Mind, Songs from the War Streets, and Fool’s Resolution—showcase a distinctive voice shaped by jazz, folk, and musical traditions he encountered while traveling and studying in West Africa, Brazil, and Europe.

Harper is also the author of the recent book Jazz in the Hill: Nightlife and Narratives of a Pittsburgh Neighborhood, which explores the rich history of jazz in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. His work reflects a deep appreciation for the musicians and communities that have shaped the city’s musical legacy.

For this Studio Jazz Series performance, Harper brings together an ensemble of Pittsburgh musicians for an evening of original compositions and creative interpretations rooted in the jazz tradition.
