Juneteenth and Black Liberty: A Talk with Dr. Edda Fields-Black

Join Pulitzer Prize-winner Dr. Edda Fields-Black for a discussion of the holiday that celebrates Black liberation in the US: Juneteenth!

Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black is an award-winning historian, artist, and public humanities scholar whose specializes in technology and labor in West Africa and the US South. Her passion is uncovering voices that are not recorded in written sources and have not been previously heard and telling stories that heretofore have not been told.

In this special talk, Dr. Fields-Black will discuss her research on Harriet Tubman and the Combahee River Raid, documented in her Pulitzer Prize-winning 2024 book COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War. She will explore the connections between Harriet Tubman and other Black abolitionists with the freedom that defines Juneteenth as a holiday.
