SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: Copperheads\, Gunners\, and Spies: Ohio Democrats in Mr. Lincoln's War
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Music Hall at ACFL&MH \n\n\n\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie No Account Required! \n\n\n\nZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279 Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJourney down the dark backroads of the Civil War with historical novelist Ruth Webster. Enter the political world of the 1864 presidential election. Meet the Copperheads\, the Knights of the Golden Circle\, Clement Vallandigham\, and the War and Peace Democrats—groups which are often merely glanced over in theaverage study of the war. The reality of Southern sentiment alive in Ohio\, Kentucky\, and Indiana\, the tri-state area called home by the author\, is startling and endlessly fascinating. It was a rich repository of plot lines for fiction\, giving new meaning to the phrase “truth is stranger than fiction.” \n\n\n\nFollow three Ohio brothers\, ancestral cousins of the author\, as they navigate their call to duty and their legacy. All three were Ohio Democrats who chose to fight in their Republican President’s war. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRuth Webster was born and raised in Covington\, Kentucky\, a town on the Ohio. The ever flowing river sparked her lifelong interest in the history and development of early America. She is a retired National Board-Certified Teacher\, specializing in social studies and language arts. \n\n\n\nRuth is proud to honor ancestors who served on both sides of the Civil War. She is a member of the Daughters of Union Veterans\, as well as the Morgan’s Men Association\, which recognizes those who served in Confederate General John Hunt Morgan’s command. \n\n\n\nRuth has been published in various print media over many decades\, and currently has four Civil War novels in print. She has been a newspaper columnist\, freelanced for regional and national publications\, and won various literary awards. The most recent was the 2021 award for Best Historical Fiction for “The Ramsey Legacy\,” presented by The Author Zone for Indie and Small Press Publishing. \n\n\n\nRuth is delighted to be speaking for a second time at the Carnegie Carnegie. A docent and transcriber at the Capt. Thomas Espy Post\, Ruth considers it a sacred place and her second home. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2nd Saturday Lectures made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust

SUMMARY:Princess Ida
DESCRIPTION:Running October 8-10 & 14-17\, 2021\n\n\n\nPrincess Ida is a hilarious twist on a traditional medieval fairy tale. The operetta tells the tale of a Princess\, who eschews her marriage obligations to the Prince of a neighboring kingdom (the wedding pact made when they were both infants) to run a women’s university. Women as warriors\, men as maidens\, something for everyone! \n\n\n\nThe operetta satirizes feminism\, women’s education\, Darwinian evolution\, stuffy men and just about everyone else. \n\n\n\nClick here for tickets.

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Lecture Series: A Civil War Husband
DESCRIPTION:October 9 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH \n\n\n\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie    No Account Required! \n\n\n\nZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88157987607      Meeting ID: 881 5798 7607 \n\n\n\nThe year is 1861. The United States was dividing over state’s rights and slavery. Thomas D. Nelson was working on his small farm in Plain Grove\, Lawrence County\, Pennsylvania. On August 31 his life and the lives of his wife\, Lydia Jane\, and their four daughters would change forever. \n\n\n\nThomas was taken from the only life he knew and thrust into the life of a Union soldier of the American Civil War with the “Roundheads\,” 100th Pennsylvania Infantry\, Company E. Through Thomas’ letters\, experience the places he traveled to\, the people he meets along the way\, his life as a Civil War soldier\, and his concerns for his family he left behind. \n\n\n\nCindy Friend Crytzer is a former educator\, event planner\, and proud mother and grandmother living in Mercer\, Pennsylvania. She volunteers with the Mercer County Library and Historical Society and enjoys transcribing documents for the Library of Congress in her spare time. \n\n\n\nWith this love of transcription and a passion for family history and genealogy\, Cindy took special interest in the discovery of letters from her great-great-grandfather Thomas D. Nelson to his wife Lydia Jane during the American Civil War. She decided to transcribe these letters for clarity and to share them with her family and others interested in reading about the life of a Civil War soldier. After an exciting six-year journey\, Cindy’s first book\, A Civil War Husband\, was born. \n\n\n\n2nd Saturday Lectures are made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. No reservations required.
