About the show…
Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular operetta follows the story of the Mikado’s son, Nanki-Poo who has fled in disguise to find and marry his beloved, Yum-Yum, who is betrothed against her will to the lord high executioner, Ko-Ko. The Mikado pressures Ko-Ko to fulfill his quota of killings but the soft-hearted executioner finds his job too difficult. To save his job, Ko-Ko allows Nanki-Poo one month of marriage to Yum-Yum in exchange for participating in a staged execution. But of course, Ko-Ko’s plan backfires and he finds himself subject to capital punishment for allegedly killing the Mikado’s son. The tangled web of plot lines eventually unravels in Gilbert’s usual topsy-turvy manner.
