SUMMARY:The Pittsburgh Savoyards present “The Grand Duke”
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n\n\n\nFor all ticket inquiries contact Pittsburgh Savoyards at 412-734-8476 or tickets@pittsburghsavoyards.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch 20-22 & 27-29Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM | Sundays at 2:30 PMSet in the tiny Grand Duchy of Pfennig‑Halbpfennig in 1750\, Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Grand Duke follows a scrappy theatrical troupe led by theatrical manager Ernest Dummkopf\, blundering lead comedian Ludwig\, his sweetheart Lisa\, and the imperious leading lady Julia Jellicoe\, as they conspire to topple the miserly\, hypochondriacal Grand Duke Rudolph. On the eve of the company’s latest opening night production\, Ludwig is to be married to Lisa\, but all the parsons in the town are unavailable because they have been summoned by the Grand Duke. Both the company and the people of the town have grown to hate the Grand Duke\, so a scheme is concocted to oust him from power. A fantastical plot then unfolds\, involving the company’s secret signal (the eating of a sausage roll); an obscure legal oddity (the “statutory duel” of drawing playing cards\, which declares the winner take the place of the loser\, and the loser legally dead); a spin of the roulette wheel by an unexpected visitor; and not one\, not two\, not three\, but FOUR prospective brides for the Grand Duke! Hijinks\, mistaken identities\, and Gilbert’s witty dialogue propel the troupe from rehearsal to courtroom‑style machination\, while Sullivan’s jaunty\, satirical score punctuates every bit of comic absurdity until at last\, in true topsy‑turvy fashion\, everything is finally and satisfactorily resolved. \n\n\n\nThe Grand Duke is Gilbert & Sullivan’s final composition as a duo and originally premiered March 7\, 1896. Despite favorable reviews on opening night\, the opera was not a success\, lasting for only a paltry (by G&S standards) 123 performances. Due to the unsuccessful run (the only G&S show that lost money) and the strained relationship between the pair\, they never worked together again. This version has been substantially trimmed down from the original 1896 running time of 3 hours. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\n\nFor all ticket inquiries contact Pittsburgh Savoyards at 412-734-8476 or tickets@pittsburghsavoyards.org

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Savoyards presents "Utopia\, Limited"
DESCRIPTION:For all ticket inquiries contact Pittsburgh Savoyards at 412-734-8476 or tickets@pittsburghsavoyards.org \n\n\n\n Gilbert & Sullivan’s Utopia\, Limited is a delightfully absurd operetta in which a small island decides their surest path to greatness is to copy Victorian England—down to the last legal loophole and layer of red tape. The island’s ruler calls in a troupe of overconfident British “experts” to transform their traditional island into a model of modern civilization\, complete with companies\, contracts\, and comically complicated rules. Of course\, the results are ridiculous: tradition collides with bureaucracy\, common sense disappears under paperwork\, and the dream of progress spins wildly out of control. With playful satire\, larger-than-life characters\, and music that bubbles with mischief\, Utopia\, Limited turns modernization into a hilarious spectacle and proves that trying to be “perfectly proper” can be perfectly disastrous. \n\n\n\nUtopia\, Limited is Gilbert & Sullivan’s thirteenth composition as a duo and originally premiered in October of 1893. Unlike their previous compositions\, it was not considered a success in its time and was rarely revived professionally. In modern times\, however\, it has been rediscovered and celebrated by a devoted fanbase as a hidden gem of the canon. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\n\nFor all ticket inquiries contact Pittsburgh Savoyards at 412-734-8476 or tickets@pittsburghsavoyards.org

SUMMARY:The Pittsburgh Savoyards Present "H.M.S. Pinafore"
DESCRIPTION:Please call 412-734-8476 for all ticket inquiries.\n\n\n\nMarch 14-16 & 21-23Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM | Sundays at 2:30 PMPlease call 412-734-8476 for all ticket inquiries. In Gilbert and Sullivan’s commercially and critically acclaimed operetta\, the British ship H.M.S. Pinafore is currently docked at Portsmouth as its merry crew of proud English sailors attends to their usual duties. One sailor\, the handsome Ralph Rackstraw\, reveals to his shipmates that he is in love with Josephine\, the daughter of Captain Corcoran\, the captain of their ship\, despite the problem that society prevents him from marrying someone above his station. Unbeknownst to Rackstraw\, Josephine suffers from society’s issues\, wishing to marry Ralph instead of Joseph Porter\, the pretentious “ruler of the Queen’s Navy.” Even after loud opposition from fellow sailor Dick Deadeye\, the crew supports Ralph and Josephine’s forbidden union\, sneaking around in the dead of night to escape notice from Corcoran and Porter while Corcoran experiences his own forbidden love interest budding between him and Little Buttercup\, a hearty lower-class woman guarding some secrets of her own. In the end\, the power of love triumphs over societal rank in life\, fulfilling the promise of a happy and hilarious ending. \n\n\n\nMusic Director Guy Russo.  Stage Director Melissa Grande. Please call 412-734-8476 for all ticket inquiries. A free shuttle service from Main Street will be available for this production. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

SUMMARY:The Pittsburgh Savoyards present Iolanthe
DESCRIPTION:October 13 – 22\, 2023Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm | Sundays at 2:30 pm \n\n\n\nGilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe (originally produced in 1882) presents a conflict between two very different worlds. On the one hand\, we have the world of the immortal fairies – all female\, somewhat trippy and chaotic\, and ruled by a queen; on the other\, we have the world of British parliamentary peers – all male\, stodgy and precise\, and subject to the law as interpreted by the Lord Chancellor. The opera presents a political satire wrapped around a love story: the fairy Iolanthe’s half human son Strephon loves the Lord Chancellor’s ward Phyllis\, but the Lord Chancellor wishes to marry her to a peer. The fairies come to Strephon’s aid\, install him in parliament\, and cast a spell on the other members of parliament to make them pass any law Strephon proposes. The plot winds up as you’d expect\, with the lovers reunited. Along the way\, we get any number of satirical digs at the British system of law and government. \n\n\n\nMusic Director – Guy RussoStage Director – Michael McFade \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

SUMMARY:Princess Ida
DESCRIPTION:Running October 8-10 & 14-17\, 2021\n\n\n\nPrincess Ida is a hilarious twist on a traditional medieval fairy tale. The operetta tells the tale of a Princess\, who eschews her marriage obligations to the Prince of a neighboring kingdom (the wedding pact made when they were both infants) to run a women’s university. Women as warriors\, men as maidens\, something for everyone! \n\n\n\nThe operetta satirizes feminism\, women’s education\, Darwinian evolution\, stuffy men and just about everyone else. \n\n\n\nClick here for tickets.

Women as warriors\, men as maidens\, something for everyone! \n\n\n\nThe operetta satirizes feminism\, women’s education\, Darwinian evolution\, stuffy men and just about everyone else. \n\n\n\nClick here for tickets.
