SUMMARY:"A Burning Hunger": Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising\, with Lynda Schuster
DESCRIPTION:As the anti-apartheid movement grew in South Africa\, the Mashinini family became immersed in almost every facet of the liberation struggle—from guerrilla warfare to urban insurrection. When the students of Soweto rose up in 1976 to protest a new rule making Afrikaans the language of instruction\, they were led by the charismatic young Tsietsi Mashinini. Scores of students were shot down and hundreds were injured. Tsietsi’s actions on that day set in motion a chain of events that would forever change South Africa\, define his family\, and transform their lives. \n\n\n\nTonight\, acclaimed journalist and author Lynda Schuster reflects on the fiftieth anniversary of the Soweto Uprising and courage and strength of the Mashinini family\, the other students who rose up\, and the countless Black South Africans whose struggle against an oppressive system led to a historic transformation. \n\n\n\nCopies of Lynda’s book A Burning Hunger: One Family’s Struggle against Apartheid (originally published in 2004\, and reissued to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Soweto Uprising) will be available for purchase courtesy of Woolly Bear Books & Gifts. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. SUMMARY:On the Record - Be Bop and Hard Bop
DESCRIPTION:On the Record: Listening & Liner Notes is a four-part series bringing Carnegie’s own Reggie Watkins into conversation with the music that made jazz what it is. Equal parts listening party and guided discussion\, each session explores a different era of jazz history through the recordings themselves. \n\n\n\nReggie Watkins is a trombonist and composer known for his powerful tone\, expressive phrasing\, and deep roots in the jazz tradition. He has toured and recorded with icons including Maynard Ferguson and Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band\, and leads his own Pittsburgh-based quartet through a body of work that honors the heroes and history that shaped him. Watkins has spent decades not just playing the music but sharing it\, and On the Record is a natural extension of that commitment. In the third session of the On the Record series\, Be Bop and Hard Bop\, Watkins digs into the revolution\, the musicians who took jazz apart and rebuilt it faster\, harder\, and more complex than anyone thought possible. Come ready to listen\, ask questions\, and hear the music that changed everything. On the Record: Listening & Liner Notes is a four-part series. Explore all the sessions:1. Blues and Early Jazz — Thursday\, June 112. Big Bands and The Swing Era — Thursday\, July 93. Be Bop and Hard Bop — Thursday\, August 274. Free Jazz and Fusion — Thursday\, September 17

SUMMARY:"Nobody Understands Quantum Mechanics": An intro for beginners\, with David Brunco
DESCRIPTION:“I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics.” -Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. David Brunco for a guided introduction to the strange world of quantum mechanics (QM)\, presented for beginners. Is light a particle or a wave? What about the electron? Or Buckyballs?  What is electron “spin” if it actually isn’t spinning – and what else has spin? \n\n\n\nWe’ll explore what Einstein’s “spooky action at a distance” means for entangled wavefunctions collapsing faster than the speed of light. And what does “collapse of the wavefunction” really mean? Finally\, has “understanding” of QM moved much beyond “Shut Up and Calculate”? \n\n\n\nBring your questions\, and prepare to have your mind expanded and your assumptions questioned. This program is intended for adults and teens. Registration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. Please register below. \n\n\n\nThis program is intended for adults and teens. SUMMARY:On the Record - Free Jazz and Fusion
In the final On the Record session\, Free Jazz and Fusion\, Watkins brings the series to its edge\, the boundary-pushing recordings that asked what jazz could be when the rules ran out. Come ready to listen\, ask questions\, and hear where the music decided to go next. \n\n\n\nOn the Record: Listening & Liner Notes is a four-part series. Explore all the sessions:1.
