SUMMARY:The Woman’s Hour: 100 Years & Counting...
DESCRIPTION:The Woman’s Hour: 100 Years & Counting…\nA discussion on the journey to women’s suffrage and where we have yet to go. \nTuesday\, August 18\, 2020\n7:00pm \nRegister Here \nOn August 18\, 1920\, Tennessee became the 36th and final state necessary to ratify the 19th Amendment. After a long fought battle\, the United States Constitution prohibited states and the federal government from denying citizens the right to vote because of sex. However\, the journey to women’s suffrage did not end in 1920. Nor has it ended in 2020. Acknowledging that not all women have had the same experience\, the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall has assembled an expert and eclectic panel to explore the continuing passage to full enfranchisement. \nWe invite you to join us for a virtual panel discussion with moderator Jessie Ramey and panelists\, Jessica Benham\, Dr. Dana Brown\, Monica Ruiz-Caraballo\, and Ciora Thomas as we explore the journey to women’s suffrage and where we have yet to go. \nJoin us on Zoom or Facebook Live. \nThis program is made possible with support from our Women’s Hour sponsors with special thanks to Amanda Neatrour. \nAbout Our Panelists

She has authored three other books on the history of the Pittsburgh Jewish Community\, all available on her website\, and produced the documentary “A Jewish Legacy: Pittsburgh” now on DVD. Her most recent book\, Sophie – The Incomparable Mayor Masloff\, is based on news reports\, archival material and nearly seventy interviews with members of her administration collected over several years of research.  \nThe Woman’s Hour\nAs 2020 marks the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, we commemorate this milestone with programs featuring women in a series we call The Woman’s Hour. SUMMARY:Listen Locally - DeVOTED
DESCRIPTION:Listen Locally –  DeVOTED\nA Multi-Media Musical Tribute to the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage\nFriday\, May 1\, 2020\n7:30pm \nTICKETS \nOn August 18\, 1920 the United States Congress ratified the 19th Amendment\, giving women in this country the right to vote. Our country became a better place….\nThe Library & Music Hall proudly celebrates this pivotal centennial with Bell’Art Ensemble’s DeVOTED. \nA musical and visual commentary on women’s suffrage in the early 20th century\, DeVOTED pays homage to the devotion of legions of women\, named and unnamed\, who pursued equality in the form of voting rights. It conveys a multi-generational view of this tumultuous time in American history. \nDeVOTED will be performed by Bell’Art (Ashley Freeburn\, violin; Jack Kurutz\, piano; Billie Jo Miller\, piano; Lenny Young\, oboe\, as well as mezzo Raquel Winnica Young) in collaboration with soprano Laura Knoop Very and video artist David Bernabo and feature music selected across the arc of the 20th century. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm || Concert begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance / $25 at the door / $15 students \nGet your tickets in advance here. \n\nMore about the program… \nDeVOTED will run approximately 75 minutes\, divided into four sections: Ties; Battle; Hope; and Victory. Each section focuses on a different aspect of the struggle for suffrage. \nDeVOTED features an impressive roster of women composers and their even more impressive music: \n\nFrench composer Cecile Chaminade (1847-1944)\, described as “not a woman who composes\, but a composer who is a woman;”\nDame Ethel Smyth (1855-1944)\, English composer\, and active member of the suffrage movement in her country;\nAmy Beach (1867-1944)\, the first successful American composer of large classical works;\nAlma Mahler\, (1879- 1964)\, composer of songs for voice and piano. Was married to composer Gustav Mahler\, architect Walter Gropius and novelist Franz Werfel;\nMarion Bauer (1882-1955)\, influencer of American musical identity in the first half of the 20th century;\nFlorence Price (1887-1953)\, the first African American woman to be noted as a symphonic composer;\nJohanna Beyer (1888-1944)\, a German American composer and “ultra-modernist” in the 1930s\, who composed a repertoire for percussion ensemble;\nLili Boulanger (1893-1984)\, the first woman awarded the Prix de Rome composition prize;\nKatherine K. Davis (1892-1980)\, composer of more than 600 works\, mostly choral works\, including the beloved carol “The Little Drummer Boy”;\nRuth Crawford Seeger (1901- 1953)\, a modernist American composer and folk music specialist.\n\nThe ACFL&MH is thrilled that DeVOTED includes a contemporary composer. Nancy Galbraith is Chair of Composition at Carnegie Mellon University. This prolific\, “post-modernist/post-minimalist” composer’s works have enjoyed Pittsburgh Symphony premieres under the batons of Mariss Jansons and Gennady Rozhdetsvensky. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:The Nation Shall Live and Slavery Shall Die: The Presidential Election of 1864\nSpeaker: Codie Eash\nSaturday\, April 25\, 1:00PM ONLINE\nWatch online at www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie. No account is required.\nIf you use Zoom\, connect to Meeting ID 388 163 282 or click https://zoom.us/j/388163282\n \nAs Americans struggled through the Civil War’s fourth autumn\, eligible voters in loyal states cast their ballots in the presidential election of 1864. The campaign pitted incumbent Abraham Lincoln against his former general-in-chief\, George McClellan\, and its results framed the ultimate effects of the conflict itself. Soldiers and citizens collectively determined whether the nation would quell a rebellion\, or open peace negotiations; expand the rights of freed people\, or deemphasize personal liberties; and end slavery\, or keep the institution intact. More than any wartime event not decided upon a battlefield\, the course and consequences of this election are among the most significant in U.S. history. \nCodie Eash serves as Visitor Services Coordinator at Seminary Ridge Museum\, Gettysburg\, and is a 2014 graduate of Shippensburg University\, where he earned a bachelor degree in communication/ journalism and held a minor in history. He contributes to the blog Pennsylvania in the Civil War; serves as a co-host on Battles and Banter\, a military history podcast; and maintains the Facebook page “Codie Eash – Writer and Historian\,” which primarily focuses on the heritage and legacy of the Civil War era. \n2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: Death and Historical Memory
DESCRIPTION:Death and Historical Memory\nSpeaker: John Heckman: The Tattooed Historian \nSaturday\, February 8\, 2020  ||  1:00PM – 2:00PM \nHow did death on the battlefield affect those involved in the conflict? How did it shape their memory of the war?  In an era when we are revisiting our bloodiest struggle\, it is well that we look at how the men saw their experiences on the battlefield and the costs incurred upon their comrades. \nFrom the fields of fire to the GAR halls\, how did veterans of the war from the Pittsburgh area and other parts of the Commonwealth shape how we see the past? \n \nJohn Heckman is from Chambersburg\, Pa. and earned his graduate degree in history from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. After working alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as an archivist and historian\, John began a history focused\, digital media company called The Tattooed Historian. This brand has reached thousands of history fanatics from all across the globe\, a majority of whom are between the ages of 18 and 40\, thus assisting with bringing new voices into the history field in various ways. \nCurrently\, John works alongside other groups\, such as the National Park Service\, to promote the historical narrative in new ways. He also has a podcast entitled “The Tattooed Historian Show.” \nRegistration not required.   Free and open to the public. Light refreshments served.\n2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.
