SUMMARY:Shiloh: the Battle that Changed the War
DESCRIPTION:March 12\, 2016\, 1:00pm \nGary Augustine joins our rank of distinguished speakers to talk on “Shiloh: the Battle that Changed the War.” In early April 1862\, large Union and Confederate Armies clashed along the banks of the Tennessee River at a location known as Pittsburgh Landing. Out of this carnage two Union generals emerged who would eventually lead the Union to victory — U.S. Grant and W.T. Sherman. Join us as we encounter Sherman in Farley’s field; Prentiss’ men holding fast in the Hornet’s Nest; Grant surrounded by dead and dying; and Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston bleeding to death in a leafy hollow leaving one to ask how long and at what cost would this War endure? Join Gary as we seek to answer these questions. \nLight refreshments served. Registration not required. Free and open to the public. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.

SUMMARY:The Pirates of Penzance
DESCRIPTION:March 4-13\, 2016\nClick here to purchase Pittsburgh Savoyards tickets \nThe Pittsburgh Savoyards bring you The Pirates of Penzance: or\, The Slave of Duty. This comic opera in two acts is regarded as one of the finest of Gilbert & Sullivan’s works\, and masterfully staged by this 78-year theatrical company! \nThe story concerns Frederic\, who\, having completed his 21st year\, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. SUMMARY:The Sisters
DESCRIPTION:The Sisters (Richard Alfieri’s modern adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters) \nCup-A-Jo Productions \nThe Sisters is a re-imagining of Chekov’s classic Three Sisters. The story of these three sisters and the way they are forced to face themselves in the wake of their father’s death speaks to how we all seek to reconcile our pasts with our futures. By moving the action of the play from a provincial town in Russia during the early 1900′s to a more recent past the play becomes a much more visceral and confrontational drama full of pop-psychology and family woes. This production is set to take place in a historic library as an homage to Chekov and in an effort to use an unconventional space to immerse audiences in a more satisfying mash-up of old and new aesthetic and ideas that is emblematic of the play itself. \nThursday-Saturday\, January 7-9 and 14-16\, 2016 \nCup-A-Jo  Productions seeks to function as a collaboration of Pittsburgh artists working through different mediums to explore the boundaries of theatre\, creating a more visceral experience for its audience.

SUMMARY:Civil War Lecture Series - Kris White: The Valley Forge Winter
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 14\, 2015\, 1:00pm\nKris White ~~The Valley Forge Winter-The Christmas of 1862 in the Army of the Potomac \nThe year 1862 had started with high hopes for the Federal Army of the Potomac. The army had once been within 8 miles of the Confederate Capital of Richmond\, and an end to the war was seemingly  within their grasp. By Christmas of 1862 the army had been battered and defeated on numerous fields by Robert E. Lee\, the worst coming in December\, at Fredericksburg. The winter marked the lowest  morale point for the army. We will examine how far the Union morale plummeted that December\, and how the men coped with being away from home at Christmas\, as well as the celebrations they enjoyed\, in camp\, during the 1862 holiday season. \nLight refreshments served. Registration not required. Free and open to the public. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.
