SUMMARY:Dia De Los Muertos with Edna Vazquez
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 5\, 2017 | 3:00 pm \nCelebrate Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with AUTHENTIC Mexican music and culture. \nTickets \nEdna Vazquez has forged a brilliant musical path from her roots in Jalisco\, Mexico\, the same place that gave birth mariachi music. Although the style was traditionally reserved for men\,Vazquez became one of the first female mariachi vocalists and vihuela players in the Pacific Northwest. Her original material is a creative melting pot\, painting an intersection of folk\, rock\, pop and R&B. NPR’s World Cafe said Edna showed “spectacular guitar playing and passionate\, forceful vocals” and the Portland Folk Music Society calls her music “sensational Latin alternative with folkloric roots.” \n Edna is currently performing with her band in support of her most recent release\, “Sola Soy\,” and writing new music for a 2018 release. The Edna Vazquez Band features William Seiji Marsh on lead guitar (Lost Lander\, Cherry Poppin Daddies)\, Gil Assayas on keys (GLASYS)\, Jason Krivo Flores on bass and guitar (Vagabond Opera\, Taarka) and Jesse Brooke on drums and percussion (Trio Subtonic). \nThe Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host a pre-concert networking reception with Mexican hors d’oeuvres; photographer Layne Anderson will give a brief presentation on Mexican painter Frida Kahlo\, her works and her influence on Mexican culture. The event presents an entertaining opportunity for those of Mexican and Latin American heritage to share the colorful\, soulful arts of their cultures and the Day of the Dead holiday with all of the Pittsburgh community; business associates\, families and people of all backgrounds are encouraged to attend. \nDoors open at 2:00 pm for Pre-show Reception  ||  Performance begins at 3:00 pm \nTickets: $35 General Admission (includes reception) \n$25 for LACU or PMAHCC Members (includes reception) \n Available online or by calling 1-800-838-3006 \nAndrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall – Studio\n300 Beechwood Avenue\nCarnegie\, PA 15106

SUMMARY:Love Your Library
DESCRIPTION:Love Your Library\nAny and all Gifts in September will be Matched! \nSeptember is Love Your Library month.  Any gift up to $500 to the ACFL between September 1 and September 30\, 2017 will be matched by a $150\,000 grant from the Jack Buncher Foundation. There’s a catch.  All 46 libraries that are members of the Allegheny County Library Association are eligible to participate in this opportunity.  The more people give throughout the county\, the smaller the match…. \nThat’s okay.  Libraries are about two things: SHARING and EMPOWERMENT.  We ask that you share your treasure with us this September.  Your September donation in any amount – you mail a check\, drop off a cash donation at the circulation desk or donate online here –will secure a pro-rated matching gift. \nLast year\, the Carnegie Carnegie’s Love Your Library donations ranked 4th in the County\, thanks to your generosity!

A\, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves: Drills & Camp Life (Music Hall Lawn) \nSPECIAL EVENTS \nJohn Cummings\, “Gettysburg Harvest of Death” (Music Hall) 10:15 AM One of the most elusive group of Civil War battlefield photographs has been the image known as “The Harvest of Death” showing the same bodies from a near opposite angle. The group was made in the days following the battle\, most probably July 6\, 1863. There have been three prevailing ideas as to the precise location of this ghastly scene. Mr. Cummings will present his theory on where the picture was actually taken. \nChartiers Cemetery Tour of the GAR Civil War Section 11:30 AM –12:30 PM (Shuttle to and from cemetery – at Library steps) \nBook Sale\, Food & Beverages\, Vendors (Studio) 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM \nPhoto Antiquities Museum\, “Civil War Photography” (Music Hall) 1:00 PM Photography was still in its infancy\, yet enthusiastic photographers made their way to the battlefields with burdensome cameras\, glass plate negatives and caustic chemicals. The images provided posterity with a comprehensive visual record of the war and its leading figures and made a powerful impression on the populace. This talk covers the development of photography and the difficulties of the photographers who risked their lives to make a visual record of The Civil War. \nChartiers Cemetery Tour of the GAR Civil War Section 2:30 –3:30 PM (Shuttle to and from cemetery – at Library steps) \nBlue Grass Concert – Fern Hollow (Music Hall) Free 5:00 PM \nIt is strongly recommended that the free shuttle service be utilized as there is limited parking at the Library.
