SUMMARY:Listen Locally Downstairs with Rachel Whitcomb\, singer/songwriter
DESCRIPTION:Listen Locally Downstairs\nwith Rachel Whitcomb\, singer/songwriter\nWednesday\, October 16\, 2019\n7:00pm \nTICKETS \nThis Pittsburgh singer songwriter has always been drawn to the emotional side of country and Americana music\, where the melodies and lyrics intersect in simple yet meaningful ways to tell heartfelt stories. Rachel’s honest and sensitive storytelling draws audiences together across many walks of life. \nRachel’s set will include Americana\, country and bluegrass along with the personal stories tied to her original songs. She’ll also share some familiar country favorites in this acoustic set. \nJoin us mid-week and unwind. You’ll be glad you did. \nComplimentary snacks and drinks by donation. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm || Concert begins at 7:00 pm\nTickets: $10\nGet your tickets here. \nMore about the artist: \nRachel holds a Doctorate of Education in Music Education and is an Associate Professor of Music Education at Duquesne University. She strongly believes that music of all types should be included in schools so that children can have an outlet for expression that is relevant to the music in their lives outside of school. In her own childhood experiences\, there was a disconnect between the formal classical training she received and the rich country music she sang on her own and loved the most. Through her work as both a singer songwriter and teacher educator\, she hopes to inspire others to unapologetically embrace the music they love and not be afraid to study it in and out of school. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/rachel-whitcomb-838806008

SUMMARY:Written Out of History: Major John Nevin of the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry
DESCRIPTION:Written Out of History: Major John Nevin of the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry\nSpeaker: Dana B. Shoaf \nSaturday\, October 12\, 2019\, 1:00 – 2:15PM \nJoin Western Pennsylvania native and Civil War Times magazine editor Dana B. Shoaf as he tells the story of Sewickley native John J. Nevin during the Civil War. Nevin served in three different units\, most notably with the 93rd Pennsylvania\, which he led on an important\, but overlooked attack during the Battle of Gettysburg. Despite Nevin’s solid service with the 93rd\, he was virtually ignored by the veterans of the regiment during the postwar years. \n\nShoaf interweaves his talk with quotes from Nevin’s diary\, held at the Senator John Heinz R\negional History Center. This fascinating discussion reveals overlooked aspects of the Battle of Gettysburg\, as well as the complex nature of Civil War veterans and their memories of when their “hearts were touched by fire.” \nLight refreshments served. Registration not required. Free and open to the public. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust. Lecture is being held in the Lincoln Gallery. \n  \n

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: Discovering Clara Barton's Missing Soldiers Office
DESCRIPTION:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: Discovering Clara Barton’s Missing Soldiers Office \nSeptember 14\, 2019 ||  1:00 PM – 2:30 PM \nIn the aftermath of the Civil War\, relief organizer and volunteer nurse Clara Barton opened the Missing Soldiers Office to search for missing Union soldiers. From her boardinghouse in Washington\, she launched an operation that scoured the nation for information about soldiers who had disappeared during the conflict. In three years\, Barton and her team discovered the fate of more than 22\,000 missing men. Yet\, her work with the Missing Soldiers Office has largely been overshadowed by Barton’s role with the American Red Cross. The boardinghouse in Washington fell into disrepair and by the 1990s\, was likely to be torn down. In 1996\, a government employee named Richard Lyons made a surprising discovery and uncovered the story of Barton’s Missing Soldiers Office and preserved the historic structure to be developed into a museum that is now operated by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.  \nJake Wynn is the Director of Interpretation at the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. \nJake Wynn is the Director of Interpretation at the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. \nHe writes independently on the history of Pennsylvania’s Anthracite Coal Region on his blog\, Wynning History. \n

An experienced circlesong leader creates parts on-the-spot\, and leads the group in fun wordless songs. It’s done all over the world in countless different ways and it dates back to the earliest forms of human singing. \nSing beautiful harmonies without reading sheet music; promote self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment; and\, many participants find that it fosters cooperation\, teamwork\, and community. It’s important to listen deeply—to each other and to ourselves—and to be responsive to what is there. This is a “mistake-free” zone. Come sing with us! \nAbout Circlesong-Leader Amado Ohland\nAmado is a 4-time attendee of Bobby McFerrin’s Circlesongs workshop. As a founding member of the improvisational vocal quartet VoiceExchange\, he has co-led monthly Circlesinging events in the Washington\, D.C. area for over 6 years. He’s also an active Jazz vocalist\, and is pursuing a doctorate degree in Music Composition at West Virginia University.

DESCRIPTION:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: The Evolution of Trauma Care 1862-2019\nSpeaker: Greg Susla\nSaturday\, June 8\, 2019\, 1:00 – 2:15 PM \nThis lecture reviews Jonathan Letterman’s plan for standardizing the treatment and evacuation of wounded soldiers in the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. Letterman’s plan; General Orders 147\, called for an organized ambulance corps\, organized surgical field hospitals\, forward first aid\, triage and evacuation\, and long-term recovery hospitals. Greg’s interest in the Civil War stems from his home town\, Torrington\, CT\, the birth place of the abolitionist John Brown. Greg received his pharmacy degrees from the Universities of Connecticut and Florida and completed a critical care pharmacy residency at the Ohio State University Hospitals. \nRegistration not required.   Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series || Muskets & Applejack: Spirits\, Soldiers & the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:2nd Saturday Civil War Series || Muskets & Applejack: Spirits\, Soldiers & the Civil War\nSpeaker: Mark Will-Weber\nSaturday\, May 11\, 2019 1:00 – 2:00 PM \nHistorian Mark Will-Weber has produced a fascinating\, poignant and oft times hilarious read about one of the rarely-mentioned and little researched factors of the Civil War: Booze. This lecture highlights what Dan Sickles once called the “whiskey war.” While alcohol didn’t cause the war\, it certainly had an impact on the conflict from the halls of Congress to the country’s most hallowed battlefields. From the first intoxicated shots at Fort Sumter to the final toasts at Appomattox\, the author totals up who drank what and when — and how famous campaigns may have happened somewhat “under the influence.” \nMuskets and Applejack paints a full\, complex picture of the surprisingly large role alcohol played in the Civil War: how it helped heal physical and emotional wounds\, form friendships\, and cause strife. Interspersed between stories from the battlefield are authentic recipes of soldiers’ favorite drinks-from both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. \n  \n16th PA Cavalry\nMark is the great-grandson of the Civil War Col. John Kincaid Robison\, who led the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the end-game campaign leading up to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. (Seated in picture at left center with mustache.) \nBook signing follows the lecture. \nLight refreshments served. Registration not required. Free and open to the public.
