SUMMARY:Museum Spotlight: Pennsylvania Trolley Museum
DESCRIPTION:Clang\, clang\, clang went the trolley… \n\n\n\nAt this virtual program\, we welcome Jeanine DeBor\, Director of Annual Giving & Marketing of the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. Learn more about the history of this amazing museum\, find out what’s new since their 2023 renovation\, and hear the stories behind a few favorite trolleys! Following the presentation\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more.  \n\n\n\nAbout Pennsylvania Trolley Museum: \n\n\n\nThe streetcar\, or “trolley\,” played a vital role in the growth of 20th century American cities. Because of this means of transportation\, people could then live much farther from their place of work\, which led to the development of the suburbs. In 1940 the Pittsburgh Electric Railway Club established a trolley museum in the Pittsburgh area\, first in the eastern suburbs\, and then in 1954 a site was chosen in Washington County\, where the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum was established. It started with three trolleys; now there is a collection of 50 cars\, over 600 members worldwide\, 150 active volunteers\, and over 30\,000 visitors each year. The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum celebrated the opening of its new 21\,000 square-foot Welcome & Education Center (“Center”) in November 2023.  \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. To register\, go to: https://bit.ly/3T8YDjV  \n\n\n\n*** \n\n\n\nThis virtual program is part of a series promoting the Experience Kits initiative at select public libraries and is sponsored by the Heinz Center Affiliates Program (HCAP). With your library card\, receive free admission passes for two adults and up to six children to several local museums and historical sites. For more information\, visit https://www.whitehallpubliclibrary.org/books-more-parent/books-more/museum-passes/.  \n\n\n\n2024 Museum Spotlight Lectures:  \n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, September 10\, 2024: Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Historic Village\n\n\n\nTuesday\, September 17\, 2024: Pennsylvania Trolley Museum \n\n\n\nTuesday\, September 24\, 2024: Historic Fort Steuben\n\n\n\nTuesday\, October 8\, 2024: Depreciation Lands Museum \n\n\n\nTuesday\, October 15\, 2024: Fort Ligonier\n\n\n\nTuesday\, October 22\, 2024: Braddock’s Battlefield History Center

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: The Pennsylvania Reserves in the Gettysburg Campaign with Eric Mohney
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH! \n\n\n\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegieNo Account Required!Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\n**PLEASE NOTE 3rd SATURDAY DATE!** \n\n\n\nAt daybreak on July 2nd\, 1863\, roughly 2800 dusty Pennsylvanians trudged wearily\, but steadily\, westward from McSherrystown\, Pennsylvania. They had left the defenses of Washington to join the 5th Army Corps a few days earlier. They had lagged behind since catching up at Frederick\, Maryland\, on June 28th. Officers in the 5th Corps complained that these men couldn’t keep up. It was believed that they were soft from their time in the works around the National Capitol.  \n\n\n\nBut these men were anything but green. They were veterans through and through\, and this certainly wasn’t their first campaign. They had a fearsome reputation. After all\, these were the men who had routed JEB Stuart at Dranesville\, killed Turner Ashby at Harrisonburg\, held Stonewall Jackson from overrunning Porter’s Corps at Mechanicsville\, had been the Army’s fire brigade at Gaines’ Mill\, stemmed the gray tide at Charles City Crossroads\, with the Regulars saved Pope’s Army from total destruction at Second Bull Run\, forced Longstreet’s left off of South Mountain\, made first contact at Antietam\, and had broken Jackson’s line at Fredericksburg. These men wearing the sky blue Maltese cross were the Pennsylvania Reserves\, and they were determined to “conquer on the soil of their native state or perish.” \n\n\n\nEric Mohney is an independent researcher\, founding member of the PRVC Historical Society\, Army veteran\, and former Gettysburg podcaster.

SUMMARY:Museum Spotlight: Braddock's Battlefield
DESCRIPTION:Find out why Braddock’s Defeat became an epic turning point in Colonial America’s history!   \n\n\n\nAt this virtual program\, Shawn MacIntyre\, Public Engagement & Operations Manager of Braddock’s Battlefield History Center\, will highlight the history of the site and what you may see during your visit. Following the presentation\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more! \n\n\n\nAbout Braddock’s Battlefield History Center: \n\n\n\nThe Braddock’s Battlefield History Center (History Center) stands where the Battle of the Monongahela took place on July 9\, 1755. It was also known as Braddock’s Defeat\, and it is the most widely recognized battle of the French and Indian War\, which developed into the Seven Year’s War. It involved dozens of nation states siding with either Great Britain or France; many different Native American tribes were involved as well. The fighting was for control of the western frontier of Pennsylvania and the Ohio River Valley at the point in Pittsburgh where the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers meet to form the Ohio River. \n\n\n\nThis battle was important in training George Washington and eventually helped him become commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Braddock’s Field was also the site of a rally of rebellious militiamen and farmers during the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794\, and during the American Civil War the site was used for the training of Union forces. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required.
