DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration with fun and interactive story-telling and multi-cultural activities celebrating the Tamil Heritage Month and the Tamil Harvest & Thanksgiving Festival of Pongal (also celebrated as Sankaranti\, Lohri\, and Bihu in different parts of India). Pongal is when families\, friends\, and communities come together\, expressing gratitude for nature\, agriculture\, and the bountiful harvest and sharing in special traditional foods\, art\, rituals\, and games embracing the indigenous Tamil practices.  Tamil people can trace their ancestry to the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India and Ealam (Sri Lanka). The Tamil diaspora around the world includes large Tamil populations in 29 other countries including the USA with Tamil as one of their offical languages such as in Singapore. \n\n\n\nOur Pongal celebration will feature a talk about this vibrant tradition; delicious examples of customary foods; a live dance performance by Nandanik Dance Troupe; a visit from Persis Naumann\, founder of Kelir Books; and an opportunity to create beautiful Rangoli designs on canvas with Priya Arts.  \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to celebrate Pongal. People from many races\, religions\, classes\, and castes celebrate the festival. Even though communities integrate their religious practices\, it is not a religious festival. It is also intergenerational – from elders to young children\, everyone has a place in the festival. Basic daily activities – from when to wake up\, go to sleep\, and when to eat\, were determined by some fifty short pieces of fife and drum music heard each day in camp. Music also served as a critical component of moving troops across a battlefield\, alerting men when to charge the enemy or retreat from the field. \n\n\n\nIn this discussion\, historian Patrick Jones will discuss the use of fifes and drums during the Civil War\, as well as drum construction and makers. Patrick will also have original drums on hand for viewing\, and will demonstrate calls and music of the period. \n\n\n\nPatrick Jones is a member of the Camp Chase Fifes & Drums where he has studied and transcribed percussion notation from various historical fife and drum manuals. He has served primarily as Drum Sergeant for the past ten years. Along with Camp Chase\, he also performs with\, and instructs\, the Fort Pitt Fife and Drum Corps. \n\n\n\nRestoring historic drums\, and building authentic reproductions\, is also a passion of his. Through his website Rudiments & Rope\, Patrick provides educational information about historical drums and their makers. \n\n\n\nPatrick has taught 5th grade for 19 years at the Upper St. Clair School District\, where for 14 years he also instructed the high school drumline. \n\n\n\n2nd Saturday Lectures made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust

DESCRIPTION:Frederick Douglass: Advocate for Equality features an exploration of the full trajectory of Douglass’s epic life from 1818 to 1895. In this traveling exhibition\, viewers can learn about Douglass’s escape from slavery\, his work as an abolitionist\, and his tireless fight for equality for all individuals in the Jim Crow era. This exhibition explores Douglass’s impact and his life through his own words and in photographs and documents from the Gilder Lehrman Collection. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit will be on display\, free and open to the public during regular library hours\, in the Lincoln Gallery through February 24.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a symphonic tribute to Abraham Lincoln– Aaron Copland’s beloved work\, Lincoln Portrait. \n\n\n\nRenowned NFL player\, veteran\, actor and speaker Rocky Bleier will narrate the Copland piece. James Gourlay\, well known to Pittsburgh audiences as the Music Director of River City Brass Band\, will lead Duquesne University’s Wind Symphony. \n\n\n\nAaron Copland composed Lincoln Portrait in 1942\, during the dark\, frightening years of World War II. The orchestra score incorporates some of Lincoln’s most gripping oratory\, with the narrator speaking over the music. \n\n\n\nA dessert and coffee reception in the Lincoln Gallery follows the performance.Please note the time change to 3:00 pm.$20 in Advance$25 at the Door$5 for students with I.D. and children 12 and under.  \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\n\nVisit the Captain Thomas Espy Post!Come early and tour our Civil War Room\, a true national treasure. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Black History with us this February! \n\n\n\nDuquesne professor Dr. Pamela Walck shares the fascinating story of the women who helped make the Pittsburgh Courier into the most widely-circulated Black newspaper in America. Launched in 1907\, the Pittsburgh Courier published weekly for nearly sixty years. During that time\, the Courier became known for its dedicated news reporting\, promotion of Black novelists and poets\, and editorial support for social progress. \n\n\n\nDr. Walck is researching a book on the Courier‘s women writers and editors\, focused on the paper’s years under publisher Jessie Vann. \n\n\n\nCome learn about this vital chapter in Black American history! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279 Meeting ID: 937 057 9279On March 7\, 1863\, The Anglo-African published the now well-known address by Frederick Douglass concerning the recruitment of Black men for the U.S. military\, “Men of Color\, to Arms!”. Throughout the war\, the newspaper shared both the deeds and words of Douglass as he sought to support\, and sometimes criticize\, the war effort as it related to African Americans. This talk will use the articles in The Anglo-African as a lens to explore Douglass’s contributions as he fought for Black enlistment\, equal pay\, and fair treatment\, and how he supported other African American contributions during the Civil War.Kelly D. Mezurek is a historian whose work focuses on the Black men who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and the Union navy\, both during the American Civil War and in their lives as veterans in the late-nineteenth century. Her book\, For Their Own Cause: The 27th United States Colored Troops (The Kent State University Press\, 2016)\, is a 2017 Ohioana Book Award nonfiction finalist. She has also published essays on the USCT who served as prison guards and Black veterans who resided in Midwestern soldier’s homes.Mezurek\, a professor of history\, has been teaching in Northeastern Ohio universities for over twenty years. She is a member of the Ohio Humanities Speakers Bureau and served on the Ohio Civil War 150 Advisory Committee.
