SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: 1864 Middle Tennessee Campaign
DESCRIPTION:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: 1864 Middle Tennessee Campaign\nSpeaker: Richard Condon\nSaturday\, November 9\, 2019\, 1:00 – 2:30 PM \nBy Fall of 1864\, the ragged Confederate Army of Tennessee\, under the command of Maj. Gen. John Bell Hood\, had set forth on a desperate campaign from Georgia through Tennessee. Although Hood’s operation in late 1864 climaxed at the battle of Nashville on December 15-16\, the fate of his army was sealed two weeks earlier at Franklin\, where 10\,000 total casualties were inflicted in a span of five hours. It was only a matter of time after the Confederate defeat in Middle Tennessee that the army would gradually dissipate. Between November and December 1864\, the fighting in Middle Tennessee foreshadowed the result of the war\, and for the Federal army\, set a stage where the West was won. \nRich Condon is a public historian based out of Pittsburgh\, although he began his career as a battlefield guide in Franklin\, Tennessee. For nine years he has worked with a multitude of sites and organizations\, including The Battle of Franklin Trust\, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum\, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park\, and Flight 93 National Memorial. Rich is a contributing writer for the Pennsylvania in the Civil War blog\, and director of Civil War Pittsburgh – an organization focused on education and preservation regarding Western Pennsylvania’s role in the American Civil War. \nPlan on coming early and join us and American Legion Post 82 at 12:30 pm for a Veterans Day flag-raising ceremony. \nRegistration not required.   Free and open to the public\n2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust. \n

SUMMARY:Listen Locally with Roger Humphries and RH Factor Art Blakey Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Listen Locally Roger Humphries and RH Factor\nArt Blakey Tribute\nFriday\, December 27\, 8:00pm\nTICKETS \nJoin us this holiday season for a spectacular evening in celebration of two Pittsburgh Jazz legends in Roger Humphries and RH Factor’s Tribute to Art Blakey  with special guest\, Brazilian vocalist\, Kenia. \nArt Blakey\, born in Pittsburgh in 1919\, was profoundly influential on mainstream jazz. Legend has it that Blakey started his music career as a teenager on piano and was switched to drums – at gunpoint by a club owner – to clear the piano for a young Erroll Garner. Regardless of how he found his way to the drum set\, Blakey went on to become a prominent name in jazz with his band\, the Jazz Messengers. \nRoger Humphries is a household name in Pittsburgh.  He is rated by music critics as one of the most exciting percussionists in the business today.  He credits Blakey with “teaching (him) how to swing.”  Like Blakey\, Roger Humphries began playing professionally as a teenager.  A loving husband\, father and doting grandfather to a large extended family\, he resides in Pittsburgh with his wife. Roger Humphries is truly a living legend\, and an example of how jazz is life: pure\, authentic and powerful. \nGet a head start to the New Year’s Eve celebration with a fabulous and affordable night at Carnegie Carnegie Hall.  Come out for an evening of cool sophistication\, without all the fuss\, hassle and expense of too many New Year’s Eve outings. \nTickets are $25 in advance; $30 at the door\nClick here to purchase tickets or call 1-800-838-3006. \nAbout the artist: \nHumphries has provided the rhythmic beat for such greats as Ray Charles\, Horace Silver\, Richard “Groove” Holmes\, Stanley Turrentine\, James Moody\, Lee Morgan\, Dr. Billy Taylor\, Benny Green\, Lionel Hampton\, Coleman Hawkins\, Clark Terry\, J.J. Johnson\, Dizzy Gillespie\, George Benson\, Jon Faddis\, Slide Hampton\, Randy Brecker\, Joe Williams\, Milton Jackson\, Jimmy Smith\, Jimmy Witherspoon\, Nathan Davis\, Pete Henderson\, Don Patterson\, Gene Harris\, Grant Green\, George Harris\, Freddie Hubbard\, Bill Dogget\, Jack McDuff\, and a list of great musicians that goes on and on and on.

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:The Nation Shall Live and Slavery Shall Die: The Presidential Election of 1864\nSpeaker: Codie Eash\nSaturday\, April 25\, 1:00PM ONLINE\nWatch online at www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie. No account is required.\nIf you use Zoom\, connect to Meeting ID 388 163 282 or click https://zoom.us/j/388163282\n \nAs Americans struggled through the Civil War’s fourth autumn\, eligible voters in loyal states cast their ballots in the presidential election of 1864. The campaign pitted incumbent Abraham Lincoln against his former general-in-chief\, George McClellan\, and its results framed the ultimate effects of the conflict itself. Soldiers and citizens collectively determined whether the nation would quell a rebellion\, or open peace negotiations; expand the rights of freed people\, or deemphasize personal liberties; and end slavery\, or keep the institution intact. More than any wartime event not decided upon a battlefield\, the course and consequences of this election are among the most significant in U.S. history. \nCodie Eash serves as Visitor Services Coordinator at Seminary Ridge Museum\, Gettysburg\, and is a 2014 graduate of Shippensburg University\, where he earned a bachelor degree in communication/ journalism and held a minor in history. He contributes to the blog Pennsylvania in the Civil War; serves as a co-host on Battles and Banter\, a military history podcast; and maintains the Facebook page “Codie Eash – Writer and Historian\,” which primarily focuses on the heritage and legacy of the Civil War era. \n2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.

SUMMARY:Listen Locally - DeVOTED
DESCRIPTION:Listen Locally –  DeVOTED\nA Multi-Media Musical Tribute to the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage\nFriday\, May 1\, 2020\n7:30pm \nTICKETS \nOn August 18\, 1920 the United States Congress ratified the 19th Amendment\, giving women in this country the right to vote. Our country became a better place….\nThe Library & Music Hall proudly celebrates this pivotal centennial with Bell’Art Ensemble’s DeVOTED. \nA musical and visual commentary on women’s suffrage in the early 20th century\, DeVOTED pays homage to the devotion of legions of women\, named and unnamed\, who pursued equality in the form of voting rights. It conveys a multi-generational view of this tumultuous time in American history. \nDeVOTED will be performed by Bell’Art (Ashley Freeburn\, violin; Jack Kurutz\, piano; Billie Jo Miller\, piano; Lenny Young\, oboe\, as well as mezzo Raquel Winnica Young) in collaboration with soprano Laura Knoop Very and video artist David Bernabo and feature music selected across the arc of the 20th century. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm || Concert begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance / $25 at the door / $15 students \nGet your tickets in advance here. \n\nMore about the program… \nDeVOTED will run approximately 75 minutes\, divided into four sections: Ties; Battle; Hope; and Victory. Each section focuses on a different aspect of the struggle for suffrage. \nDeVOTED features an impressive roster of women composers and their even more impressive music: \n\nFrench composer Cecile Chaminade (1847-1944)\, described as “not a woman who composes\, but a composer who is a woman;”\nDame Ethel Smyth (1855-1944)\, English composer\, and active member of the suffrage movement in her country;\nAmy Beach (1867-1944)\, the first successful American composer of large classical works;\nAlma Mahler\, (1879- 1964)\, composer of songs for voice and piano. Was married to composer Gustav Mahler\, architect Walter Gropius and novelist Franz Werfel;\nMarion Bauer (1882-1955)\, influencer of American musical identity in the first half of the 20th century;\nFlorence Price (1887-1953)\, the first African American woman to be noted as a symphonic composer;\nJohanna Beyer (1888-1944)\, a German American composer and “ultra-modernist” in the 1930s\, who composed a repertoire for percussion ensemble;\nLili Boulanger (1893-1984)\, the first woman awarded the Prix de Rome composition prize;\nKatherine K. Davis (1892-1980)\, composer of more than 600 works\, mostly choral works\, including the beloved carol “The Little Drummer Boy”;\nRuth Crawford Seeger (1901- 1953)\, a modernist American composer and folk music specialist.\n\nThe ACFL&MH is thrilled that DeVOTED includes a contemporary composer. Nancy Galbraith is Chair of Composition at Carnegie Mellon University. This prolific\, “post-modernist/post-minimalist” composer’s works have enjoyed Pittsburgh Symphony premieres under the batons of Mariss Jansons and Gennady Rozhdetsvensky. \n  \n  \n
