It is the darkest and most emotionally engaging of the Savoy Operas. The show takes place in the Tower of London where the gentleman Colonel Fairfax is wrongly accused of sorcery and sentenced to death within the hour. Fairfax hatches a plan to avoid letting his estate fall into the hands of his scheming cousin (incidentally\, his accuser) by secretly marrying Elsie Maynard\, a strolling singer. She agrees to be blindfolded during the ceremony and expects to be a wealthy widow upon Fairfax’s imminent demise\, leaving her free to marry her lover\, the jester Jack Point. Serfass) for an informative conversation on his elationship with President\, Abraham Lincoln. \nIn a May 26\, 1863 letter to Isaac Arnold\, Abraham Lincoln referred to Grant’s possible capture of Vicksburg\, saying\, “his campaign from the beginning of this month up to the twenty second day of it\, is one of the most brilliant in the world.” And thus began an unusual friendship. Lincoln and Grant developed a working relationship in which each was comfortable with his and the other’s role. \nIt is with a profound honor that he tells the story of one of America’s greatest military leaders and Ken takes it very seriously to reaffirm Grant’s place of honor among the most respected people of our nation’s history.  His passion for the subject is evident in his presentation\, and it is hard not to be affected by his enthusiasm for his subject and believe that you’ve met US Grant in living history. \nLight refreshments served. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust.

However\, just hours after Longstreet saved Lee’s army along the Orange Plank Road in the Wilderness\, tragedy struck. While riding along the road during an audacious and successful flank attack\, Longstreet\, like Stonewall Jackson\, was accidentally shot by his own men\, less than three miles from the spot of Jackson’s fateful wounding. Longstreet’s wounding\, like Jackson’s\, forever changed the face of the Army of Northern Virginia. \nKristopher D. White is the co-founder of Emerging Civil War\, the author of numerous books and publications\, and is Education Manager at the American Battlefield Trust in Washington\, DC. \nLight refreshments served. 2nd Saturday Lecture Series made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust. \nRegistration not required.   Free and open to the public.

Malia’s musical journey began at the age of 3 with classical violin lessons and took a turn with the discovery of bluegrass at age 7. Since then\, Malia has performed with a number of different groups\, taken home a range of prizes\, and graced the stage of numerous venues up and down the East Coast. Malia is currently the Director of Music Education at the Front Porch Roots Music School in Charlottesville\, VA.  \nDanylo Fedoryka was trained as a classical pianist and transitioned into Celtic guitar to found the band Scythian. He has toured full-time with Scythian for almost 15 years and four of those years Ben-David Warner was part of the band. He is enjoying the tables now being turned and being part of Ben-David’s band!  \nLarissa Fedoryka began her cello career at age 3 as a member of the Fedoryka Family Players. She completed a doctorate in musical arts in classical performance at the University of California-Santa Barbara while touring with Scythian as well as Latin recording stars Marco Antonio Solis and Gloria Trevi.

Turner is from the Ellwood City-Zelienople area\, north of Pittsburgh and was a writer at various newspapers in Western Pennsylvania. \nHe has a BA and BS (American History and Political Science) and MA (Masters)\, from West Virginia University.  He was one of the original first ones to work at the West Virginia Regional History Center in Morgantown. \nWhile at WVU\, he wrote books on the “Stolen Elections in West Virginia’s Civil War”\, now long out of print\, studying the birth of a new state of West Virginia\, while being held in the Union during the Civil War. \nHe has contributed articles to most Civil War mainstream publications\, including CW Times Illustrated\, America’s Civil War\, North-South\, Military  Images among others.  He was also a longtime consultant for the Civil War Time-Life Series\, and served on the Pennsylvania Governors Speakers Series touring the state. \n \nHe was Co-author of the best-selling “The Civil War in Pennsylvania: A Photographic History” as well as the follow-up\, “Civil War in Pennsylvania: The African-American Experience.” Ken is working on two other book projects presently\, one involving an officer from Pittsburgh in the 77th PA. \nHe is a longtime collector of photos and artifacts of Pennsylvania in the Civil War\, and is acknowledged expert on Pennsylvania’s Civil War history. \nHe is currently Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission\, and travels across the state dedicating historical markers and advising historical sites. \nLight refreshments served. Registration not required.   Free and open to the public. \n

The band’s cinematic\, progressive rock sound appeals to a diverse audience throughout the United States and abroad. \nThe program will feature high-energy\, original music that draws from both classical and progressive rock styles.  This intimate show provides a unique opportunity to experience the three cellists of Cello Fury performing without drums\, with the strings providing both the melodic and harmonic lines as well as a percussive\, rhythmic backbeat. \nSee below for a full biography. \nDoors open at 6:00 pm || Concert begins at 7:00 pm \nTickets:\n$15 advance\n$20 at the door\n$5 youth 12 & under \nGet your tickets in advance here. \nAbout Cello Fury \nCello Fury’s multi-faceted approach to performing\, which combines high-energy live shows\, music education\, workshops\, and tours\, has allowed the band to perform over 100 concerts yearly in venues ranging from classical music halls and rock clubs to schools and music festivals. As an independent band\, Cello Fury has released three albums of original music\, including “X” (2018)\, “Symphony of Shadows” (2013)\, and “Cello Fury” (2011). \nPast notable shows include entertaining a crowd of 67\,000 during an NFL half time show\, headlining the Three Rivers Arts Festival\, and performing three sold-out shows at the Byham Theater on New Year’s Eve.  Cello Fury performed official showcase performances for two years straight at the largest music festival of its kind in the world\, “South By Southwest” (SXSW). Cello Fury was selected to perform at the “Americans for the Arts” national convention\, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) annual conference\, and presented an interactive performance and workshop at the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) national conference. \nCello Fury performed as an instrumental solo ensemble with the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra\, both performing and orchestration their original music for full symphonic orchestra.  Three of Cello Fury’s band members performed as cello soloists with Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops Orchestra.  Cello Fury was featured on the cover of the indie music publication\, Vents Magazine\, and was featured on the cover of the Pittsburgh City Paper’s “City Guide”. Cello Fury was chosen as one of Skope Magazine’s “Artists to Watch”. Feature articles on the band have been written in various newspapers throughout the US\, highlighting both performances and the band’s dedication to music education. \nConnecting with artists across genres\, Cello Fury has collaborated with dance companies\, theater organizations\, opera and orchestras as well as with rock bands and singer-songwriters.  Composers as well as performers\, Cello Fury’s band members have orchestrated their original works for string and symphonic orchestras\, performing as amplified soloists with classical ensembles. Collaborating as multi-disciplinary artists\, Cello Fury’s original music was featured and performed live by the ensemble in three full-length ballets with Bodiography Contemporary Ballet. The band has performed alongside Texture Contemporary Ballet in productions of “Blur” and “Interfusion”\, and the band’s style of rock and classical fusion has become a favorite among dance choreographers in the US and Germany. Cello Fury was presented as soloists with the multi-modal performing arts company\, Resonance Works\, in a concert that showcased both traditional classical music as well as Cello Fury’s modern compositions. Highlighting the event was the performance of “Bachianas Brasilieras” with coloratura soprano Meghan Picerno and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s cello section. Cello Fury has worked with theater company\, Bricolage Productions\, for five of their “Midnight Radio” shows\, performing as featured musical guests and foley artists. The band has backed local and national artists such as B. E. Taylor\, Scott Blasey of The Clarks\, Tift Merritt\, Bill Deasy\, Joy Ike\, and more\, has appeared on soundtracks for indie films and albums.The ensemble premiered International Opera Theater’s “La Bisbetica Domata” by Efrain Amaya in Italy\, which showcased Cello Fury on stage as solo instrumentalists. This opportunity also allowed the band to perform solo concerts throughout Italy. Cello Fury premiered and recorded two classical works written especially for their ensemble of electro-acoustic instruments\, and are featured on the album\, “Other Sun” (2011) by composer Nancy Galbraith. \nIn addition to an active performance and touring schedule\, the band focuses on inspiring young musicians and giving back to the community. Each year\, Cello Fury performs for thousands of young people throughout the mid-Atlantic states. Cello Fury partners with “Artivate” (formerly “Class Act Arts”) in the Maryland and Washington DC area and “Young Audiences of New Jersey and Eastern PA” to present interactive programs and workshops at schools. In 2013 alone\, Cello Fury reached approximately 15\,000 children through 60 outreach concerts. In 2015-2016\, Cello Fury performed for 20\,000 children through 60-plus outreach concerts across six states. Each summer\, Cello Fury leads four weeks of an alternative strings camps for aspiring musicians. In 2017\, there were 100 participants ranging in age from 7 to 18. Cello Fury has also worked with hundreds of students through the Pittsburgh Public School’s “Summer Dreamers” camp. \nCello Fury proudly endorses Thomastik-Infeld Strings. \n

DESCRIPTION:Gettysburg: The Meaning and Legacy\n\nSpeaker: David Albert\nSaturday\, February 9\, 2019 1:00 – 2:30 PM \nThe Meaning and Legacy of Gettysburg \nThe battle of Gettysburg seems to hold a special place in people’s minds when it comes to the Civil War. Even people who know little else about the war seem to be aware of and moved by the name Gettysburg. Why? \nDavid Albert is a retired Air Force officer who has had an interest in the Civil War since he was a teenager. He co-taught the Civil War elective at Air Command and Staff College and served as a Civil War docent at the Alabama Department of Archives and History for ten years. \nHe taught a course on the Life of the Civil War Soldier for the Elderhostel Program (now called Road Scholars) and for the University of North Carolina\, Asheville’s College for Seniors. He currently teaches the same course\, as well as courses on the Gettysburg Campaign and the Antietam Campaign\, for the Osher Lifetime Learning Institute at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. David is a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Civil War Roundtable. \nMr. Albert’s talk will attempt to explain why he believes this battle still maintains such an enduring legacy in the national psyche even 156 years later. \nLocation: Lecture will be held in the Studio \nLight refreshments served.
