SUMMARY:Megan McGarry & The Stapletons in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Verita Bella Productions Presents:\nMegan McGarry & The Stapletons in Concert\nTickets\nSaturday\, April 7\, 2018\n6:30pm – Doors open and reception\n7:00pm – The Stapletons\n7:45pm – Intermission\n8:00pm – Megan McGarry \nMegan McGarry is an award-winning\, multi-instrumentalist\, a notable vocalist\, and a very talented song-writer. This twenty-one-year-old\, Pennsylvania-born\, ever-smiling songstress radiates positivity and is bringing American roots music to a new generation. In musical partnership with her father\, Chris McGarry\, the two light up the stage with their infectious musical enthusiasm. Combining the rich sounds of claw-hammer banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, mandolin\, and Megan’s naturally strong\, yet emotionally sensitive vocals\, the duo performs a fun and engaging blend of old-time tunes\, bluegrass standards\, and original songs. \nMegan’s writing explores engaging narratives. Her discography includes songs that present tales both true and made-up\, as well as songs that explore the world of emotions. She joins these authentic lyrical stories to unique\, traditionally-informed musical ideas. Her writing adds a distinguished and charming element to their repertoire. More information here. \nThe Stapletons are a husband and wife\, harp and guitar duo. Together\, they write baroque folk rich with hints of Appalachian balladry\, Delta blues\, and echoes of the English folk revival movement. Blues-driven harp and guitar arrangements topped by ethereal vocal harmonies combine to create a wondrous sound. \nCasey\, a mariachi from LA married Kate\, who grew up in Middle Ridge\, WI. Swept into sooty post-industrial Pittsburgh\, The Stapletons set about reconciling their many cultural clashes and started a brood of children. Six years later they sat down one morning in the kitchen with a Celtic harp and a Mexican guitar and began writing music. Their unique\, chamber folk style features blues driven harp riffs\, tightly interwoven vocals\, and ethereal harmonies. Inspired by their home surrounded by civil war ghosts\, this husband wife duo write intricate songs that bring the past alive\, illuminate the present\, and lift listeners into the stars. SUMMARY:Mission Siberia & the Lithuanian Deportees to Siberia
DESCRIPTION:Mission Siberia & the Lithuanian Deportees to Siberia\nFollowing a 1939 pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union dividing Eastern Europe\, the Baltic States\, including Lithuania\, fell under the Russian Sphere and so the Soviet Union prepared for occupation. Between 1940 and 1953 more than one hundred thousand Lithuanians were deported to Gulag camps and other forced settlements in Siberia and remote areas of the former Soviet Union. Many died in exile while others were slowly released following Stalin’s death. Still many remained in Siberia\, unable to return to Lithuania. \nFor decades few Lithuanians knew the stories of these deportees. In 2006\, The Lithuanian Youth Council initiated “Mission Siberia” to raise awareness\, memorialize the victims of the deportation and forge ties with Lithuanians still living in Siberia. \nEach year Mission Siberia sends 15 young Lithuanians to Siberia and other areas in the former Soviet Union to research\, tidy up Lithuanian cemeteries and meet survivors and their families. \nOn Saturday\, May 19 Pittsburgh Lithuanian School offers a unique opportunity to hear from participant\, Justinas Riškus\, and his experiences during his recent mission to Siberia. \nFree and Open to the Public\nSaturday\, May 19\, 2018\n8:00 PM \nAndrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall (Studio)\n300 Beechwood Avenue\nCarnegie\, PA 15106 \nFree parking and shuttle service available. SUMMARY:Carl's Story presented by Noretta Willig
DESCRIPTION:Carl’s Story presented by Noretta Willig\nTuesday\, September 18\, 2018\, 7:00 pm \nCarl’s Story begins in the woods near St. Mihiel\, France\, almost a century ago on September 16\, 1918. On that victorious day\, when the US Army won its first battle in Europe and the war was just days from ending\, Carl Willig\, a doughboy in company H and the uncle of author\, Noretta Willig\, was killed. \nAn eye-witness wrote Carl’s parents that “he suffered no pain\, my dear friends. Death was instantaneous.” But Carl was lost. His remains could not be found. For three generations\, his family felt the grief of that loss. \nThen\, ninety years after Carl’s death\, Noretta’s phone rang and a genealogist identified Noretta as Carl’s next of kin. Why? Because “probably they found something.” Searching a trunk filled with faded photographs and letters\, Noretta met Carl across the years and learned what a powerful man young Carl was. \nCarl’s Story is about the almost forgotten heroes\, those who must be remembered. It is an American story–of family and duty\, discovery and honor–about treasures lost then found. \nLight refreshments. Author book signing and sale following lecture. Proceeds from the sale of books are being donated to veterans in need. There will be an exhibit of World War I medals by David Burrows\, including those issued by Carnegie\, following the program. \nRegistration not required. Free and open to the public. \n

SUMMARY:The Pittsburgh Savoyards present - The Yeoman of the Guard
DESCRIPTION:The Pittsburgh Savoyards present – The Yeoman of the Guard\nOctober 12 – 21\, 2018 \nTickets \nThe Pittsburgh Savoyards Presents Gilbert & Sullivan’s\, The Yeomen of the Guard.  The only tragedy ever written by G & S!!! \nThe Yeomen of the Guard\, or The Merryman and His Maid is Gilbert and Sullivan’s sparkling comic opera set in Shakespearean times during the reign of King Henry VIII. It is the darkest and most emotionally engaging of the Savoy Operas. The show takes place in the Tower of London where the gentleman Colonel Fairfax is wrongly accused of sorcery and sentenced to death within the hour. Fairfax hatches a plan to avoid letting his estate fall into the hands of his scheming cousin (incidentally\, his accuser) by secretly marrying Elsie Maynard\, a strolling singer. She agrees to be blindfolded during the ceremony and expects to be a wealthy widow upon Fairfax’s imminent demise\, leaving her free to marry her lover\, the jester Jack Point. However\, Fairfax miraculously escapes his fate and chaos ensues.  Come and enjoy what is considered Sullivan’s best musical score with a full orchestra and laugh and weep during this jolly romp! \nTickets: $12 – $25 \nClick here for ticketing information \nPerformance Dates:  October 12*-13\,  8:00 PM\nOctober 14\, 2:30 PM\nOctober 18**-20\, 8:00 PM\nOctober 21\, 2:30 PM \n*Special Opening Night Event – Meet the Pittsburgh Savoyards!  Opening night reception following the show\, October 12\, 2018. \n**Special ticketing on Thursday\, October 18\, 2018 – Pay What You Will! \nPark for free on Main Street and enjoy our complimentary shuttle service.
