Roberts will discuss the history of Black slave-ownership among the Five Tribes (the Chickasaw\, Choctaw\, Cherokee\, Creek\, and Seminole Nations) and the Reconstruction project the United States enforced in Indian Territory (Oklahoma)\, which ended with Black people in this region becoming the only group of former slaves in the world to receive reparations in the form of land. \n\n\n\nAlaina E. Roberts is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Pittsburgh and the multi-award winning author of I’ve Been Here All the While: Black Freedom on Native Land\, which uses archival research and family history to provide a new perspective on African American and Native American history in the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. She has written for TIME magazine\, High Country News\, and the Washington Post\, and her research has been featured in CNN\, the New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The New Yorker\, and The Atlantic.

DESCRIPTION:Get ready for Thanksgiving with a hands-on workshop on sharpening and caring for your knives! A well-sharpened edge is much safer and more effective than a dull one\, and with a little guidance\, anyone can learn to keep their knife edges in excellent condition. Experienced sharpener Dennis Snedden will teach participants how to keep their own knives sharp and ready to use. \n\n\n\nEach participant should bring two or three 5″-10″ kitchen knives (non-serrated); a diamond\, oil\, or water stone (if you have one); a honing rod or steel (if you have one); your knife edge questions; and a will to learn! You will learn the best and safest techniques for honing a fine edge. Come with dull knives – leave with safer\, sharper\, functional edges! \n\n\n\nNo ceramic knives\, hair or sewing scissors\, please. \n\n\n\nA suggested donation of $15 will be put towards funding the 2025 kids’ Summer Reading Program. DESCRIPTION:James Johnson III is a versatile musician who effortlessly navigates various musical genres. His journey began at Pittsburgh’s High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) under the mentorship of jazz legend Roger Humphries\, which laid the foundation for his remarkable career. He has performed regularly with jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal and has graced prestigious venues worldwide. His impressive list of collaborations includes jazz luminaries such as George Coleman\, James Moody\, Geri Allen\, Bob James\, Kenny Garrett\, Benny Golson\, Mulgrew Miller\, Bob Mintzer\, and Kenny Werner. Johnson creatively utilizes every sound around him to blend elements of improvisation with notated music\, blurring the lines between remarkable improvisation and outstanding compositions. This unique approach results in a style of music that transcends the traditional boundaries of both. A respected figure in the music industry\, James serves as an Artist in Residence at the University of Pittsburgh School of Music. He is also a faculty member at the Afro-American Music Institute\, a Pittsburgh institution dedicated to preserving the heritage of African American music. His second solo album\, ‘Between\,’ was released in 2019. James is a familiar presence in our intimate performance space\, the Studio\, where he has collaborated with various ensembles for the Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz Series. This upcoming night of jazz is set to be special\, as James will perform with his own ensemble.
