Following the storytime\, kids will be encouraged to participate in an activity based on the story we read! \nFounded in 1980\, The McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center is a non-profit museum and research facility dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of McKeesport and its surrounding area. The Center houses the City of McKeesport’s first schoolhouse\, previously situated at five other locations. Five additional rooms display varying aspects of McKeesport and the Mon Valley’s history\, including an Industry Wing with a large-scale model of the US Steel National Tube\, church collections\, and an exhibit honoring Helen Richey. Lee’s beloved aide-de-camp in Western Virginia during the First Year of the Civil War. Washington was the great-great-grandnephew of the first president\, and was the last Washington family member to own Mount Vernon before it was sold to the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in 1858. \nMaria McKelvey is an award-winning writer\, educator\, actress\, singer\, and musician. An avowed storyteller\, she combines her many talents to create innovative programs weaving history\, literature\, music\, and art. She performs in community theatre and gives living history presentations as Beatrix Potter\, Louisa May Alcott\, Dr. Eliza Hughes\, and other historical characters. The United States was dividing over state’s rights and slavery. Thomas D. Nelson was working on his small farm in Plain Grove\, Lawrence County\, Pennsylvania. On August 31 his life and the lives of his wife\, Lydia Jane\, and their four daughters would change forever. \n\n\n\nThomas was taken from the only life he knew and thrust into the life of a Union soldier of the American Civil War with the “Roundheads\,” 100th Pennsylvania Infantry\, Company E. Through Thomas’ letters\, experience the places he traveled to\, the people he meets along the way\, his life as a Civil War soldier\, and his concerns for his family he left behind. \n\n\n\nCindy Friend Crytzer is a former educator\, event planner\, and proud mother and grandmother living in Mercer\, Pennsylvania. She volunteers with the Mercer County Library and Historical Society and enjoys transcribing documents for the Library of Congress in her spare time. \n\n\n\nWith this love of transcription and a passion for family history and genealogy\, Cindy took special interest in the discovery of letters from her great-great-grandfather Thomas D. Nelson to his wife Lydia Jane during the American Civil War. She decided to transcribe these letters for clarity and to share them with her family and others interested in reading about the life of a Civil War soldier. DESCRIPTION:Libraries are civic organizations.  When we developed Library Park\, a flagpole opposite the Library entrance became an essential part of the design.  Since November 2017\, a Veterans Day ceremony has become a tradition at the Library & Music Hall. \n\n\n\nPlease join members of Carnegie American Legion Post 82\, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves\, elected officials\, friends and colleagues at 1:30 pm on Veterans Day\, Thursday\, November 11.  Let’s set politics aside to honor and celebrate the men and women who sacrificed so much for the democracy we are privileged to call home. \n\n\n\nThe ceremony will be followed a coffee and cookies reception (cookies courtesy of Rep. Anita Astorino Kulik) in the Lincoln Gallery.  The Captain Thomas Espy Post will be open. \n\n\n\nThe ceremony takes place rain or shine.
