Tony award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff\, My Favorite Year\, Once on This Island\, Ragtime) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters\, including Horton the Elephant\, The Cat in the Hat\, Gertrude McFuzz\, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. \n\n\n\nThe Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton\, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos\, including Jojo\, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers\, but he must guard an abandoned egg\, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule\, danger\, kidnapping and a trial\, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately\, the powers of friendship\, loyalty\, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. \n\n\n\nSeussical TYA is fun for the whole family! The Mid-Atlantic borderland was a fundamentally ambiguous space where slavery and freedom intermixed because enslavers were able to kidnap free people of color as fugitive slaves. Free people of color from Gettysburg and its surrounding environs learned from these experiences to protect themselves by hiding or fleeing when Confederate soldiers crossed the Mason-Dixon Line in 1863. \n\n\n\nConfederate soldiers who kidnapped free people of color under the guise of retrieving “contrabands” in 1863 were mirroring but not quite replicating the actions of antebellum enslavers from Virginia and Maryland. Both upset the perceived division between slavery and freedom when they captured African Americans. However\, the Civil War kidnappings took place in a different political context\, illustrating the very real impact Black refugee movement had on Pennsylvania’s free people of color. \n\n\n\nRachael Barbara Nicholas is a PhD candidate studying nineteenth-century American history at West Virginia University. She has a B.A. in history and classics from Ohio Wesleyan University and an M.A. in public history from West Virginia University. Ms. Nicholas is currently the park historian at Gettysburg National Military Park. She was previously a seasonal park ranger (historical interpretation) at Gettysburg. She has also been a graduate instructor at West Virginia University\, a research assistant for the National Digital Newspaper Program\, and a graduate research associate for the Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition. Her first article was recently published in the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society. She is in the process of completing her dissertation\, which is tentatively titled “Movement\, Imagination\, and the Changing Spaces between Slavery and Freedom in the Mid-Atlantic Borderland\, 1861-1877.”

DESCRIPTION:The Terezin Ghetto (or “Theresienstadt”) was founded in 1941 as a waystation for Jewish people en route to death camps\, and functioned as such through 1945. An unusually high number of prominent Jews including artists\, scientists\, performers\, and teachers were segregated to Terezin\, leading to an especially rich cultural life within the ghetto. Paintings were created\, jazz and classical concerts occurred\, and children participated in art classes\, writing lessons\, and general education courses taught by highly qualified professionals – all organized by the Jews being confined prior to extermination. \n\n\n\nTonight\, join Rebecca Godlove of Prime Stage Theater to learn the heart-wrenching story of the children of Terezin and the adults who did whatever they could to provide them with a light in the darkness. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss Prime Stage Theater’s production of I Never Saw Another Butterfly and The Terezin Promise\, written by Celeste Raspanti and directed by Wayne Brinda. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n\n\n\n\nA Blend of Pittsburgh Jazz Tradition and Contemporary StyleAcclaimed saxophonist Tony Campbell brings his band Jazzsurgery to the Carnegie Carnegie to kick off the 2025 Studio Jazz Series in a celebration of the rich history of jazz in Pittsburgh\, delivering a joyous and unforgettable experience for music lovers. \n\n\n\nThe youngest saxophone player inducted into the Pittsburgh Jazz Society’s Hall of Fame\, Campbell’s musical journey began in Pittsburgh’s vibrant Hill District in 1973. With a career that spans more than four decades\, Campbell has collaborated with legendary artists\, toured extensively and made significant contributions to the national jazz scene. \n\n\n\nAfter studying at Berklee College of Music and the University of Pittsburgh\, under the esteemed Dr. Nathan Davis\, Campbell toured with Roy Ayers and became a leading voice in various ensembles\, including the Roger Humphries Big Band. He has performed with entertainment greats such as Ben Vereen\, Marvin Hamlisch\, Jack Jones\, Neil Sedaka and many others\, developing his own distinct sound along the way. \n\n\n\nIn 2000\, Tony returned home from the road\, began teaching\, rejoined the Roger Humphries Big Band as the lead alto player and started Jazzsurgery. In 2005\, he recorded his first CD as a bandleader\, titled “T.C.B. II: Taking Care of Business.” His second CD\, “Eastside\,” was released in 2013 and features acclaimed Pittsburgh musicians such as Sean Jones\, Roger Humphries\, and Dwayne Dolphin. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, Campbell is performing\, recording\, producing\, teaching\, and leading jazz jam sessions showcasing some of the Pittsburgh region’s finest up-and-coming talent. DESCRIPTION:Join David Brunco\, PhD\, for a discussion of climate change\, using Lawrence Krauss’s book The Physics of Climate Change as a guide.  Learn about the fundamental science that should provide the foundation for an understanding of this pressing issue. \n\n\n\nThis event will be different from most climate change discussions\, as participants are not told to accept climate change on faith or authority in deference to climate scientists. Rather\, we will start with fundamental science and data\, and then go to where it takes us.  In the process \, we will discuss the role of the atmosphere in simple earth/sun energy balances\, blackbody radiation\, the Stefan-Boltzmann  Law\, Planck’s Law\, the 1860s experimental work of John Tyndall\, the 1896 calculations of Nobel-laureate Svante Arrhenius\, vibrations of the carbon dioxide molecule\, the measurements of American scientist Charles Keeling\, radiative forcing\, global surface temperature trends\, and the cooling upper stratosphere. The Army of the Cumberland and Army of Tennessee clashed for control of middle Tennessee and in a see-saw battle that stretched over four days\, the Federals emerged triumphant but by the narrowest of margins. This sole victory in a sea of Federal defeats helped provide military support for the recently issued Emancipation Proclamation and started the Union army back on the road to Chattanooga. The cost was incredibly high: more than 25\,000 casualties among the 81\,000 participants. \n\n\n\nPennsylvania’s contribution to the victory was small but mighty. The state had just three infantry regiments\, two cavalry regiments\, and a single artillery battery present with the Army of the Cumberland. However\, their contributions were significant. The 77th Pennsylvania launched the first Federal counterattack in the opening moments of the battle while the 78th Pennsylvania won plaudits for not only capturing the colors of the 26th Tennessee but for playing a hand in capturing Wright’s Tennessee battery on January 2nd. Likewise\, the Anderson Troop\, a cavalry regiment that had mutinied at the beginning of the campaign\, played a very active role in the campaign that eventually resulted in two of its soldiers being awarded the Medal of Honor.  \n\n\n\nA graduate of the University of Toledo\, Dan Masters is the descendant of five Union veterans of the Civil War and has been deeply involved in the study of that conflict since the late 1990s. He has written eleven books\, numerous articles\, and more than 950 blog posts about the Civil War\, much of his work focusing on the western theater. In addition to regularly writing on his blog Dan Masters’ Civil War Chronicles\, he also recently finished work on his eleventh book Hell by the Acre: A Narrative History of the Stones River Campaign published by Savas Beatie in November 2024. He currently lives in Perrysburg\, Ohio with his wife Amy and four of their six children while his oldest son is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Pinafore is currently docked at Portsmouth as its merry crew of proud English sailors attends to their usual duties. One sailor\, the handsome Ralph Rackstraw\, reveals to his shipmates that he is in love with Josephine\, the daughter of Captain Corcoran\, the captain of their ship\, despite the problem that society prevents him from marrying someone above his station. Unbeknownst to Rackstraw\, Josephine suffers from society’s issues\, wishing to marry Ralph instead of Joseph Porter\, the pretentious “ruler of the Queen’s Navy.” Even after loud opposition from fellow sailor Dick Deadeye\, the crew supports Ralph and Josephine’s forbidden union\, sneaking around in the dead of night to escape notice from Corcoran and Porter while Corcoran experiences his own forbidden love interest budding between him and Little Buttercup\, a hearty lower-class woman guarding some secrets of her own.
