SUMMARY:Madan Sara: The Power of Haitian Women
DESCRIPTION:Our celebration of Black History Month continues with this screening of a powerful documentary by filmmaker Etant Dupain. The women known as Madan Sara in Haiti work tirelessly to buy\, distribute\, and sell food and other essentials in markets through the country. Despite the obstacles faced by the women working in a sector that lacks investment\, infrastructure and state assistance\, the Madan Sara continue to be one of the most critical parts of the Haitian economy and of who we are as a country. \n\n\n\nThe Madan Sara documentary tells the stories of these indefatigable women who work at the margins to make Haiti’s economy run. Despite facing intense hardship and social stigma\, the hard work of the Madan Sara puts their children through school\, houses their families\, and helps to ensure a better life for generations to come. This film amplifies the calls of the Madan Sara as they speak directly to society to share their dreams for a more just Haiti. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a screening of this documentary\, followed by a group discussion led by Haiti Friends. Registration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. Please click here to register!

SUMMARY:The Physics of Climate Change - with David Brunco\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Join David Brunco\, PhD\, for a discussion of climate change\, using Lawrence Krauss’s book The Physics of Climate Change as a guide.  Learn about the fundamental science that should provide the foundation for an understanding of this pressing issue. \n\n\n\nThis event will be different from most climate change discussions\, as participants are not told to accept climate change on faith or authority in deference to climate scientists. Rather\, we will start with fundamental science and data\, and then go to where it takes us.  In the process \, we will discuss the role of the atmosphere in simple earth/sun energy balances\, blackbody radiation\, the Stefan-Boltzmann  Law\, Planck’s Law\, the 1860s experimental work of John Tyndall\, the 1896 calculations of Nobel-laureate Svante Arrhenius\, vibrations of the carbon dioxide molecule\, the measurements of American scientist Charles Keeling\, radiative forcing\, global surface temperature trends\, and the cooling upper stratosphere. These concepts are presented in understandable terms for a general audience. \n\n\n\nBring an open mind\, critical thinking skills\, and a passion for the scientific method. We hope you’ll join us! \n\n\n\nCan’t make it in person? Tune in via our Facebook Live stream\, starting at 7:00 PM! \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: Pennsylvania at the Battle of Stones River with Dan Masters
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH! \n\n\n\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegieNo Account Required!Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\nThe Battle of Stones River\, fought at the turning of the year from 1862-1863\, was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The Army of the Cumberland and Army of Tennessee clashed for control of middle Tennessee and in a see-saw battle that stretched over four days\, the Federals emerged triumphant but by the narrowest of margins. This sole victory in a sea of Federal defeats helped provide military support for the recently issued Emancipation Proclamation and started the Union army back on the road to Chattanooga. The cost was incredibly high: more than 25\,000 casualties among the 81\,000 participants. \n\n\n\nPennsylvania’s contribution to the victory was small but mighty. The state had just three infantry regiments\, two cavalry regiments\, and a single artillery battery present with the Army of the Cumberland. However\, their contributions were significant. The 77th Pennsylvania launched the first Federal counterattack in the opening moments of the battle while the 78th Pennsylvania won plaudits for not only capturing the colors of the 26th Tennessee but for playing a hand in capturing Wright’s Tennessee battery on January 2nd. Likewise\, the Anderson Troop\, a cavalry regiment that had mutinied at the beginning of the campaign\, played a very active role in the campaign that eventually resulted in two of its soldiers being awarded the Medal of Honor.  \n\n\n\nA graduate of the University of Toledo\, Dan Masters is the descendant of five Union veterans of the Civil War and has been deeply involved in the study of that conflict since the late 1990s. He has written eleven books\, numerous articles\, and more than 950 blog posts about the Civil War\, much of his work focusing on the western theater. In addition to regularly writing on his blog Dan Masters’ Civil War Chronicles\, he also recently finished work on his eleventh book Hell by the Acre: A Narrative History of the Stones River Campaign published by Savas Beatie in November 2024. He currently lives in Perrysburg\, Ohio with his wife Amy and four of their six children while his oldest son is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force.

SUMMARY:The Pittsburgh Savoyards Present "H.M.S. Pinafore"
DESCRIPTION:Please call 412-734-8476 for all ticket inquiries.\n\n\n\nMarch 14-16 & 21-23Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM | Sundays at 2:30 PMPlease call 412-734-8476 for all ticket inquiries. In Gilbert and Sullivan’s commercially and critically acclaimed operetta\, the British ship H.M.S. Pinafore is currently docked at Portsmouth as its merry crew of proud English sailors attends to their usual duties. One sailor\, the handsome Ralph Rackstraw\, reveals to his shipmates that he is in love with Josephine\, the daughter of Captain Corcoran\, the captain of their ship\, despite the problem that society prevents him from marrying someone above his station. Unbeknownst to Rackstraw\, Josephine suffers from society’s issues\, wishing to marry Ralph instead of Joseph Porter\, the pretentious “ruler of the Queen’s Navy.” Even after loud opposition from fellow sailor Dick Deadeye\, the crew supports Ralph and Josephine’s forbidden union\, sneaking around in the dead of night to escape notice from Corcoran and Porter while Corcoran experiences his own forbidden love interest budding between him and Little Buttercup\, a hearty lower-class woman guarding some secrets of her own. In the end\, the power of love triumphs over societal rank in life\, fulfilling the promise of a happy and hilarious ending. \n\n\n\nMusic Director Guy Russo.  Stage Director Melissa Grande. Please call 412-734-8476 for all ticket inquiries. A free shuttle service from Main Street will be available for this production. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS
