In the 1920s\, members of the American Indian Osage Nation in Oklahoma struck it rich when oil was discovered under their lands. DESCRIPTION:Every Friday & Saturday\, October 13 – October 26Please note that the Friday\, September 20 tour will not include a stop at Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall. \n\n\n\nCarnegie! Where it all began. The original tour from Dark History Pittsburgh has 10 terrifying stops—all within a one-mile loop. The stories you’ll hear are all true and based on historical events. \n\n\n\nJoin Dark History Pittsburgh as their Spirit Guide takes you on a dark and macabre journey across a century of time. Gain entrance to one of the most mysterious buildings in the borough (but be prepared—we climb to the 3rd and 4th floors\, which have not been inhabited in 90 years!). Tales are told by flashlight\, and guests are encouraged to test the Ghost Net for any shadows crossing their path. \n\n\n\nThis tour also includes entry into the famed Library known as the “Carnegie Carnegie.” One of only three built under Andrew Carnegie’s personal supervision\, this beautiful\, historical building holds on to its own share of the unexplained. Flying books\, shadow people\, the Man in the Hat\, and the Screaming Woman ~ all keep house here. \n\n\n\nThe tour ends in Carnegie’s first cemetery\, hidden in plain sight\, where you learn of the families who died and were buried there. Enjoy an interesting scavenger hunt as you find the Patriarch’s grave. \n\n\n\nNOTES: You will be walking about 1 mile. We climb 3-4 stories of stairs\, as some buildings are not equipped with an elevator. You will also briefly walk on/along railroad tracks. \n\n\n\nPlease wear comfortable shoes! \n\n\n\nNo pets allowed. \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, this tour is not wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\nSuggested age is 12+ years \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

This discussion will highlight a number of well-known\, and some not so well-known operatives who served both armies during the Civil War.  \n\n\n\nThe program will also cover the factors that led to a large number of spies in place throughout the war\, as well as the espionage technology of the era. More specifically\, the program will focus on the contributions of escaped slaves as a valued source of information to the U.S. Army\, as well as active agents of intelligence-gathering who served undercover in the Confederacy.  \n\n\n\nAward-winning author Robert Hilliard has written on sports\, history\, and the outdoors for over three decades. Rob wrote for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review\, and other outlets such as Pennsylvania Wildlife and Pittsburgh History Magazine.  \n\n\n\nAfter contributing to a Beaver County history anthology entitled Rivers of Destiny\, Rob wrote his first book\, A Season on the Allegheny\, focusing on Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest. Rob’s first novel\, the historical espionage thrilled In Freedom’s Shadow\, won a 2024 International Firebird Book Award for African American Fiction\, and a Spring 2024 PenCraft Book Award for Historical Fiction.

DESCRIPTION:Clang\, clang\, clang went the trolley… \n\n\n\nAt this virtual program\, we welcome Jeanine DeBor\, Director of Annual Giving & Marketing of the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. Learn more about the history of this amazing museum\, find out what’s new since their 2023 renovation\, and hear the stories behind a few favorite trolleys! Following the presentation\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more.  \n\n\n\nAbout Pennsylvania Trolley Museum: \n\n\n\nThe streetcar\, or “trolley\,” played a vital role in the growth of 20th century American cities. Because of this means of transportation\, people could then live much farther from their place of work\, which led to the development of the suburbs. In 1940 the Pittsburgh Electric Railway Club established a trolley museum in the Pittsburgh area\, first in the eastern suburbs\, and then in 1954 a site was chosen in Washington County\, where the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum was established. It started with three trolleys; now there is a collection of 50 cars\, over 600 members worldwide\, 150 active volunteers\, and over 30\,000 visitors each year. The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum celebrated the opening of its new 21\,000 square-foot Welcome & Education Center (“Center”) in November 2023.  \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:Step back in time to experience life during the colonial days! \n\n\n\nAt this virtual program\, Kimberly Chaffee\, Site Coordinator of the Depreciation Lands Museum\, will highlight the history of the site and what you may see during your visit. Following the presentation\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more! \n\n\n\nAbout Depreciation Lands Museum: \n\n\n\nThe Depreciation Lands Museum and Park was created by Hampton Township in 1973. Their goal was to preserve and interpret the early years of European settlement in the Depreciation Lands\, which were areas set aside by the government to compensate its soldiers for their service in the Revolutionary War. \n\n\n\nThis is a colonial-era living history settlement in an area that by 1805 was known as Talley Cavey. All the buildings are staffed by knowledgeable\, costumed interpreters. The grounds include the original Pine Creek Covenanter Church and cemetery\, along with an authentic log house and many reproduction buildings\, such as a school\, smoke house\, bake oven\, blacksmith shop\, and barn\, which holds a Conestoga style wagon\, mercantile and workshop. There is also a research library\, which contains a collection of books on 18th century history\, life\, and skills of the time period.  \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:When a person has a cardiac arrest\, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be as effective in the first few minutes as conventional CPR for cardiac arrest at home\, at work\, or in public. \n\n\n\nJoin the American Heart Association for this free Hands-Only CPR training. This training is for informational purposes only\, and participants will not receive a certification. \n\n\n\nA training session for ages 18+ starts at 1:00 PM\, and a training for ages 12-17 starts at 2:00 PM. DESCRIPTION:Learn more about our region’s role in the French and Indian War! \n\n\n\nAt this virtual program\, Mary Manges\, Executive Director at Fort Ligonier Association\, will highlight the history of the site and what you may see during your visit. Following the presentation\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more! \n\n\n\nAbout Fort Ligonier: \n\n\n\nFort Ligonier is a reconstructed British fort from the French and Indian War\, located in Ligonier\, PA. The fort was built in 1758 as winter quarters for soldiers\, and it was used to house supplies of the British army and to defend the supply line crucial to the community. It was the last in a string of fortifications that stretched from Philadelphia to a new fort that became Fort Pitt and was on land that became Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nOn display in the Museum is a recreated artillery train that was used to defend the fort and the remains of an 18th century powder magazine. There are displays about a hospital ward\, women’s roles at the hospital\, and medical care in the British army during this time period. In addition\, there is information on the archaeological digs that have taken place at Ft. Ligonier\, and the phases of reconstruction and expansion. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required.
