A versatile performer\, Harper has spent years performing and recording across a wide range of musical settings\, from jazz ensembles to internationally touring bands. \n\n\n\nIn addition to his work as a bandleader\, Harper spent several years as a guitarist\, percussionist\, and vocalist with the multi-platinum band Rusted Root\, touring nationally and recording on the group’s albums Stereo Rodeo and The Movement. His own recordings—including Under a Quiet Sun\, Once Upon a Mind\, Songs from the War Streets\, and Fool’s Resolution—showcase a distinctive voice shaped by jazz\, folk\, and musical traditions he encountered while traveling and studying in West Africa\, Brazil\, and Europe. \n\n\n\nHarper is also the author of the recent book Jazz in the Hill: Nightlife and Narratives of a Pittsburgh Neighborhood\, which explores the rich history of jazz in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. That early foundation led to an international performing career\, including years touring with the acclaimed pianist Ahmad Jamal and appearances at major venues and festivals around the world. \n\n\n\nEqually comfortable as a collaborator and bandleader\, Johnson has shared the stage with many of jazz’s most respected artists\, including George Coleman\, Geri Allen\, Benny Golson\, and Kenny Garrett.
