SUMMARY:Princess Ida
DESCRIPTION:Running October 8-10 & 14-17\, 2021\n\n\n\nPrincess Ida is a hilarious twist on a traditional medieval fairy tale. The operetta tells the tale of a Princess\, who eschews her marriage obligations to the Prince of a neighboring kingdom (the wedding pact made when they were both infants) to run a women’s university. Women as warriors\, men as maidens\, something for everyone! \n\n\n\nThe operetta satirizes feminism\, women’s education\, Darwinian evolution\, stuffy men and just about everyone else. \n\n\n\nClick here for tickets.

SUMMARY:Bilingual Storytime\, with Award-Winning Author Taghreed Najjar
DESCRIPTION:Join Attawheed Islamic Center\, Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall\, and Crafton Public Library in welcoming award-winning Palestinian-Jordanian author Taghreed Najjar as she reads from her book The Ghoul\, which was selected for Chicago Public Library’s “Best of the Best” books of 2020. \n\n\n\nIn a starred review\, Kirkus Reviews calls it “a stimulating and funny fantasy about acceptance… Inspired by Arab folklore\, the story revolves around life in a quiet and peaceful village somewhere in Arabia\, where the only thing disturbing the surrounding peace is the ghoul living up in the mountains – a monster everyone dreads and fears. …Perplexed by the idea of a monster that nobody has seen or heard\, Hasan decides to defy his parents and investigate himself.” \n\n\n\nAttend via Zoom\, or watch at www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Libraries are civic organizations.  When we developed Library Park\, a flagpole opposite the Library entrance became an essential part of the design.  Since November 2017\, a Veterans Day ceremony has become a tradition at the Library & Music Hall. \n\n\n\nPlease join members of Carnegie American Legion Post 82\, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves\, elected officials\, friends and colleagues at 1:30 pm on Veterans Day\, Thursday\, November 11.  Let’s set politics aside to honor and celebrate the men and women who sacrificed so much for the democracy we are privileged to call home. \n\n\n\nThe ceremony will be followed a coffee and cookies reception (cookies courtesy of Rep. Anita Astorino Kulik) in the Lincoln Gallery.  The Captain Thomas Espy Post will be open. \n\n\n\nThe ceremony takes place rain or shine.

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Lecture Series: Armistead and Hancock - Behind the Gettysburg Legend
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH \n\n\n\nArmistead and Hancock:Behind the Gettysburg LegendWith Tom McMillanSaturday\, November13\, 2021 1:00 PM IN PERSON & ONLINE \n\n\n\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie No Account Required!Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279 Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 In a war of brother versus brother\, theirs has become the most famous broken friendship: Union general Winfield Scott Hancock and Confederate general Lewis Armistead. Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels (1974) and the movie Gettysburg (1993)\, based on the novel\, presented a close friendship sundered by war\, but history reveals something different from the legend. In his deeply researched book\, Tom McMillan sets the record straight. Even if their friendship wasn’t as close as the legend has it\, Hancock and Armistead knew each other well before the Civil War. After emotionally parting ways when the Civil War broke out\, their lives wouldn’t intersect again until Gettysburg\, when they faced each other during Pickett’s Charge.Part dual biography and part Civil War history\, Armistead and Hancock: Behind the Gettysburg Legend clarifies the historic record with new information and fresh perspective\, reversing decades of misconceptions about an amazing story of two friends that had defined the Civil War.Tom McMillan\, a lifelong student of the Civil War\, has served on the board of trustees of Pittsburgh’s Heinz History Center\, the board of directors of the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial\, and the marketing committee of the Gettysburg Foundation. His other books are Flight 93: The Story\, The Aftermath and The Legacy of American Courage on 9/11 (2014) and Gettysburg Rebels: Five Native Sons Who Came Home to Fight as Confederate Soldiers (2017)\, which won the Bachelder-Coddington Literary Award. He retired earlier this year after a forty-three-year career in sports media and communications. \n\n\n\n2nd Saturday Lectures made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust

SUMMARY:Listen Locally Downstairs with Tom Breiding: Storytelling through Song
DESCRIPTION:Listen Locally Downstairs with Tom Breiding: Storytelling through Song\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nTom Breiding\, local Americana\, folk-rock artist\, and celebrated writer\, chronicles small-town America through original music. His songs tell the stories that history has all but forgotten – stories that sink so deep into a person’s psyche that they have to be told again.  A singer in the traditions of Woody Guthrie\, Pete Seger\, and Pittsburgh’s own Anne Feeney\, Tom’s music is especially relevant in today’s tumultuous times.   \n\n\n\nTom’s work has taken him all over the U.S. and through every back road and coal town of his home state\, West Virginia. He is also a regular performer at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Woody’s hometown of Okemah\, OK.  The Carnegie Carnegie is thrilled to welcome him to the Studio for the next installment of our Listen Locally Downstairs series.  \n\n\n\nTICKETS$15 in Advance || $20 at the DoorClick here to get your tickets.
