SUMMARY:Conscience and Coercion: The Early Protestants of Amiens\, 1530-1650; Traces of Their Lives - A gallery talk by David Rosenberg
DESCRIPTION:Explore acts of resistance and official persecution of French Protestants during the early Reformation. This new exhibit from the research of Dr. David Rosenberg features the signatures of over 100 Protestants of Amiens\, France\, as well as the records of their official targeting for heresy. \n\n\n\nThis research demonstrates how French political and religious leaders surveilled and persecuted members of this new minority\, while also illuminating the experiences of the Protestants themselves\, including interrogations\, exile\, execution\, and book burnings\, as well as acts of resistance through civil disobedience.  \n\n\n\nTonight\, join Dr. Rosenberg for a discussion of his research\, the delicate process of piecing together an individual’s life from scattered archival clues\, and the continued resonance today of this striking example of historical oppression. \n\n\n\nDr. David Rosenberg received a Ph.D. in European History from Yale University with a dissertation on the Protestant movement in Amiens in the 16th century\, focusing on the attitudes of weavers and wool combers towards Protestantism. The exhibit “Conscience and Coercion” represents over fifty years of archival research on this topic. In 2013 Dr. Rosenberg was named a Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government\, and he received the Medal of the City of Amiens in 2023 for his contributions to the history and memory of that region. \n\n\n\nThis exhibit will be on display in the 2nd Floor Lincoln Gallery from August 27 through September 25 during regular Library hours. SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: Western Pennsylvania in the Maryland Campaign with Matt Borders
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MHZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279 Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\nPrior to the Conscription Act of 1863\, Pennsylvania was the largest contributor to the Federal war effort in terms of manpower. There are few better examples of this than the 1862 Maryland Campaign. Pennsylvania put 81 different regiments or batteries into the field for the Maryland Campaign and organized thousands of militia on the homefront in anticipation of a potential invasion.  \n\n\n\nWestern Pennsylvania had a huge role to play in this effort. Fully 20 different Pennsylvania units that fought in the Army of the Potomac during the Maryland Campaign were either entirely or partially from Western Pennsylvania. Join us as we investigate the participation of Western Pennsylvania in the Maryland Campaign\, where they fought\, and who they fought with.  \n\n\n\nA graduate of Michigan State and Eastern Michigan University\, Matthew Borders holds a BA in United States History with a focus in the American Civil War and a MS in Historic Preservation. Following graduation\, he taught at Kalamazoo Valley Community College before accepting a position with the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program. He worked as the historian for the ABPP for six years\, during which time he became a certified battlefield guide at Antietam National Battlefield and Harpers Ferry National Historic Site. He is also the President of the Frederick County Civil War Roundtable and a founding member of the Antietam Institute.  \n\n\n\nCurrently\, Matthew is a Park Ranger at Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick\, Maryland. He\, along with fellow guide Joe Stahl\, had published four books in their Faces of Union Soldiers series. These works look at Federal soldiers at a variety of battles\, their stories\, and their regiments.

Newmeyer and Sam Taylor\, and screened with live musical accompaniment provided by Eric Cook on theater organ! \n\n\n\nThe Freshman features the beloved silent film icon Harold Lloyd as a hapless first-year college student whose dream of becoming popular on campus leads him to try out for the football team – but his plans go repeatedly awry. Can our nerdy young hero find success on the gridiron? Lloyd’s most successful film of the 1920s\, The Freshman inspired a wave of college films in its wake. \n\n\n\nThe film will be introduced by film scholar Shane Bliss\, whose essays have appeared in the book Thoughts on the Thin Man (2014) and issue #2 of The Pre-Code Companion (2015). Shane is currently writing a book on the careers and filmographies of silent film actors whose films are mostly lost.  \n\n\n\nAdmission is free; donations are gratefully accepted! DESCRIPTION:When John Neiman first read The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank\, he couldn’t have anticipated the lifelong impact that this iconic account of the persecution of European Jews would have on him. Unable to forget Anne’s words\, he wrote a letter to her surviving father\, Otto Frank\, in 1974 and the two men soon became close friends. Otto’s steadfast belief in the goodness and dignity of all people would later inspire John to join the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church. \n\n\n\nTonight\, Father John offers a rare opportunity to learn about the Franks and their experiences during the Holocaust from a source close to the family. Sheridan in the summer of 1888\, fierce debates arose over how Sheridan\, regarded as one of the Union’s “three great generals” during the Civil War and a divisive figure\, should be remembered. “After I am Gone\,” based on Jonathan A. Noyalas’s forthcoming book\, General Philip H. Sheridan: Life\, War\, and Memory (Routledge)\, will examine how Sheridan’s allies\, including his widow Irene\, Union veterans\, political figures\, and artists including Carl Augustus Heber and Gutzon Borglum\, worked to counter General Sheridan’s critics who claimed that Sheridan sought glory for himself at the expense of his troops and present him as a gallant general who cared for his soldiers and forged an unbreakable bond with them. \n\n\n\nJonathan A. Noyalas is director of Shenandoah University’s McCormick Civil War Institute and a history professor at Shenandoah. He is the author or editor of seventeen books and over one hundred articles\, essays\, chapters\, and reviews which have appeared in a variety of scholarly and popular publications. Prof. Noyalas has consulted on a wide array of public history projects with groups including the National Park Service\, American Battlefield Trust\, and Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District. He has appeared on C-SPAN’s American History\, NPR’s “With Good Reason\,” and PCN. Noyalas is the recipient of numerous awards for his teaching and scholarship\, including Shenandoah University’s Exemplary Teaching Award for the First Year Seminar and the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia’s Outstanding Faculty Award.

DESCRIPTION:By the end of World War II\, Nazi Germany had established over a thousand concentration camps\, where millions of Jews\, Communists\, gay Germans\, and others were incarcerated and eventually killed. Allied soldiers spent months liberating the prisoners of these camps following the end of the War. Some of those soldiers had come to Europe from the communities of Western Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\nTonight\, local veteran and researcher Richard Murphy shares the harrowing but inspiring stories of the Pittsburgh-area World War II service members who helped liberate the Nazi concentration camps as the war ended. His journey began at Pittsburgh’s High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) under the mentorship of jazz legend Roger Humphries\, which laid the foundation for his remarkable career. He has performed regularly with jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal and has graced prestigious venues worldwide. His impressive list of collaborations includes jazz luminaries such as George Coleman\, James Moody\, Geri Allen\, Bob James\, Kenny Garrett\, Benny Golson\, Mulgrew Miller\, Bob Mintzer\, and Kenny Werner. \n\n\n\nJohnson creatively utilizes every sound around him to blend elements of improvisation with notated music\, blurring the lines between remarkable improvisation and outstanding compositions. This unique approach results in a style of music that transcends the traditional boundaries of both. \n\n\n\nA respected figure in the music industry\, James serves as an Artist in Residence at the University of Pittsburgh School of Music. He is also a faculty member at the Afro-American Music Institute\, a Pittsburgh institution dedicated to preserving the heritage of African American music. His second solo album\, ‘Between\,’ was released in 2019. \n\n\n\nJames is a familiar presence in our intimate performance space\, the Studio\, where he has collaborated with various ensembles for the Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz Series. This upcoming night of jazz is set to be special\, as James will perform with his own ensemble.
