SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: The Not So Invisible Women: The Daughters of Charity at Gettysburg with Dominish Miller
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH \n\n\n\nZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\nMore than 230 Daughters of Charity served as nurses during the Civil War. This talk will trace the contributions of these Catholic sisters during and after the 1863 battle of Gettysburg. Their courageous work left a lasting mark on the town of Gettysburg\, and changed the anti-Catholic sentiment that permeated the local culture.  \n\n\n\nDominish Marie Miller is the Third Circuit Court of Appeals Librarian for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. She is the founder of Preserving the History of Newberrytown\, runs the Lewisberry Area History Lovers group\, and is a founding board member of the Newberrytown Special Events Committee. She also serves as Librarian and VIS Chair for the Harrisburg chapter\, NSDAR.  \n\n\n\nDominish also reenacts with Co. C\, 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry\, where she portrays a second corporal. She is the author of two cookbooks\, and two local history books.

DESCRIPTION:Islam is a Global religion. Many people in Western countries don’t understand it and fear it. This can lead people to feel cautious\, careful\, or fearful of Islam\, or in some cases\, avoid it altogether or hate it due to a lack of knowledge on the topic. \n\n\n\nIn this illuminating yet clear presentation\, join Ray Milhem for an exploration of the basics of Islam; its relationship with other religions; and the tight coupling of Islam and Arabs\, comparable to the role of Christianity in the West. \n\n\n\nThe Holy Land (Palestine) was the birthplace of Christianity and Judaism. Islam was “born” in the Arabian Peninsula (modern day Saudi Arabia)\, but it has many strong connections to the Holy Land. \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss “Extreme Islam” and its similarities to “Extreme Christianity” and “Extreme Judaism.” \n\n\n\nPlease note: this presentation is intended as a safe space for education.
