SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: The Veteran Reserve Corps with David Welker
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH \n\n\n\nZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\nIn early 1863\, just two years into the Civil War\, Abraham Lincoln’s Union cause was in deep trouble\, and short on manpower the president was forced to implement the nation’s first general military draft. Similarly beset was Col. James B. Fry\, the Union’s new provost marshal general\, who had been placed in charge of the draft but without any troops to carry out the controversial effort. Just as troubled were thousands of individual wounded and injured Union combat veterans in the North’s many hospitals\, who found themselves retained in military service but unable to return to withstanding the rigors of front-line service. In a bold stroke of organizational innovation Fry set in motion solving all these problems at once by creating the Invalid Corps. Renamed the Veteran Reserve Corps (VRC)\, Fry’s force contributed to Union victory not just by conducting the Union’s drafts\, but in myriad other significant ways as well. By freeing healthy men to serve in the field the VRC ensured Northern victory and by the war’s close new Brig. Gen. Fry had commanded 60\,000 men – only Gen. Ulysses S. Grant led more troops. \n\n\n\nPerforming important rear-area duties such as guarding government facilities—military stores\, bridges\, and prisoner of war camps—or working as office clerks and hospital nurses\, the VRC’s presence scattered across the North served as a unifying\, stabilizing force during the Civil War’s darkest days. Yet in some instances these invalid soldiers\, intended only for rear area duty\, found themselves once again called to combat\, wielding skills they had learned in places such as Antietam\, Gettysburg\, and Spotsylvania. In its most notable such moment VRC men held off Confederate General Jubal Early’s corps during its July 1864 attack on Washington\, DC\, buying time for Grant to reinforce and save the nation’s capital. \n\n\n\nAlthough the VRC’s many contributions have been largely lost to American history\, now you can learn the full story of how these invalid veterans rose to continue serving their nation by making “the penultimate sacrifice.” Join historian and author David A. Welker who will be discussing his new book “Now I’m with the Invalids:” The Union’s Veteran Reserve Corps in America’s Civil War. \n\n\n\nDavid A. Welker’s previous works include The Cornfield: Antietam’s Bloody Turning Point\, Tempest at Ox Hill: The Battle of Chantilly and A Keystone Rebel: The Civil War Diary of Joseph Garey\, as well as numerous academic journal and commercial magazine and newspaper articles about diverse aspects of the Civil War. A professional historian and military analyst for the Federal Government with 40 years’ experience\, he holds a master’s degree in International Affairs from American University and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History from Westminster College.

SUMMARY:PA Lyme Resource Network presents: Dare 2B Tick Aware
DESCRIPTION:Join Janine Hauck of PA Lyme Resource Network to learn the best ways to avoid tick bites this year! The “Dare 2B Tick Aware” program aims to improve the use of prevention strategies\, reduce tick bites\, and improve early diagnosis\, using the most current research available to standardize prevention messages across the state. \n\n\n\nWe’ll explore Pennsylvania tick statistics; how to identify different kinds of ticks; where ticks live; how they behave; Lyme and other tick-borne diseases; recognizing the early symptoms of these diseases; how to prevent tick bites; and what to do if you’re bitten by a tick. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. Please click here to register. \n\n\n\nJanine Hauck was an avid outdoors person\, gardener\, and dancer until she contracted Lyme Disease in 2019. She never saw a tick on her or a bullseye rash\, nor did she feel a tick bite. When she first noticed something was wrong\, she went from doctor to doctor to no avail\, until she was finally diagnosed with chronic Lyme and Anaplasmosis\, almost two years after her initial symptoms. She is now in her fourth year of trying to recover and longs for the day when she can be as active and fit as she once was. Hardly a day goes by that she does not think about ticks. Janine has spent a lot of time learning about ticks and tick-borne illnesses. One of the things she learned is there are a lot of misconceptions out there regarding ticks and Lyme disease. She decided getting certificated by PA Lyme to go out and talk about ticks\, their habitat and prevention would be a good thing to do. It is Janine’s hope that no one suffers like herself and other chronic Lyme patients\, especially in her home state of Pennsylvania where there are a great deal of ticks and Lyme disease is on the rise.

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: The World Will Never See the Like - The Gettysburg Reunion of 1913 with John L. Hopkins
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH \n\n\n\nZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\nJohn L. Hopkins will join us to talk about his book\, The World Will Never See the Like: The Gettysburg Reunion of 1913\, which The Wall Street Journal called “a compelling\, poignant and sometimes heartbreaking account of the biggest gathering of the Blue and Gray since the Civil War.” \n\n\n\nIt’s a story of 53\,000 old comrades and former foes reunited and of the tension\, even half a century later\, between competing narratives of reconciliation and remembrance. For seven days the old soldiers lived under canvas in the stifling heat in a 280-acre encampment run by the U.S. Army. They swapped stories\, debated still-simmering controversies about the battle\, and on July 3 the survivors of Pickett’s Division and the Philadelphia Brigade shook hands across the wall on Cemetery Ridge. \n\n\n\nHopkins is a retired communication and public relations professional with more than three decades of experience in higher education\, nonprofit\, and agency settings. He was born and raised in New York City\, earned a bachelor’s degree from Williams College\, and was transplanted with his family to the Midwest 30 years ago. This is his first book.

SUMMARY:Knife Sharpening with Dennis Snedden: Whetstone Tips\, Tools\, & Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Look sharp – it’s a hands-on workshop on sharpening and caring for your knives! A well-sharpened edge is much safer and more effective than a dull one\, and with a little guidance\, anyone can learn to keep their knife edges in excellent condition. Experienced sharpener Dennis Snedden will teach participants how to keep their own knives sharp and ready to use. \n\n\n\nEach participant should bring two or three 5″-10″ kitchen knives (non-serrated); a diamond\, oil\, or water stone (if you have one); a honing rod or steel (if you have one); your knife edge questions; and a will to learn! You will learn the best and safest techniques for honing a fine edge. Come with dull knives – leave with safer\, sharper\, functional edges! \n\n\n\nNo ceramic knives\, hair or sewing scissors\, please. \n\n\n\nA suggested donation of $15 will be put towards funding the 2026 kids’ Summer Reading Program.
