SUMMARY:Robinson Run: The Story of a Frontier Community with historian Brady Crytzer
DESCRIPTION:Join Robert Morris University professor Brady J. Crytzer for an engaging exploration of the American Revolution-era history of Robinson Run! Brady has published seven books about this period of history in Western Pennsylvania\, and is currently researching the stories of three families who settled along Robinson Run\, in what was then the frontier of America. \n\n\n\nTonight he shares those stories: the lives of these settlers\, their meetings with groups of Native Americans living in the area\, how they engaged with and responded to the American Revolution and the Whiskey Rebellion\, and more. Copies of Brady’s books will be available for purchase and signing. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. Please click here to register.

SUMMARY:Conscience and Coercion: The Early Protestants of Amiens\, 1530-1650; Traces of Their Lives - A gallery talk by David Rosenberg
DESCRIPTION:Explore acts of resistance and official persecution of French Protestants during the early Reformation. This new exhibit from the research of Dr. David Rosenberg features the signatures of over 100 Protestants of Amiens\, France\, as well as the records of their official targeting for heresy. \n\n\n\nThis research demonstrates how French political and religious leaders surveilled and persecuted members of this new minority\, while also illuminating the experiences of the Protestants themselves\, including interrogations\, exile\, execution\, and book burnings\, as well as acts of resistance through civil disobedience.  \n\n\n\nTonight\, join Dr. Rosenberg for a discussion of his research\, the delicate process of piecing together an individual’s life from scattered archival clues\, and the continued resonance today of this striking example of historical oppression. \n\n\n\nDr. David Rosenberg received a Ph.D. in European History from Yale University with a dissertation on the Protestant movement in Amiens in the 16th century\, focusing on the attitudes of weavers and wool combers towards Protestantism. The exhibit “Conscience and Coercion” represents over fifty years of archival research on this topic. In 2013 Dr. Rosenberg was named a Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government\, and he received the Medal of the City of Amiens in 2023 for his contributions to the history and memory of that region. \n\n\n\nThis exhibit will be on display in the 2nd Floor Lincoln Gallery from August 27 through September 25 during regular Library hours. Learn more at www.protestantsofamiens.com. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this gallery talk is appreciated\, but not required. Please click here to register.

DESCRIPTION:Look sharp – it’s a hands-on workshop on sharpening and caring for your knives! A well-sharpened edge is much safer and more effective than a dull one\, and with a little guidance\, anyone can learn to keep their knife edges in excellent condition. Experienced sharpener Dennis Snedden will teach participants how to keep their own knives sharp and ready to use. \n\n\n\nEach participant should bring two or three 5″-10″ kitchen knives (non-serrated); a diamond\, oil\, or water stone (if you have one); a honing rod or steel (if you have one); your knife edge questions; and a will to learn! You will learn the best and safest techniques for honing a fine edge. Come with dull knives – leave with safer\, sharper\, functional edges! \n\n\n\nNo ceramic knives\, hair or sewing scissors\, please. \n\n\n\nA suggested donation of $15 will be put towards funding the 2026 kids’ Summer Reading Program. Space is limited\, so please click here to register! 18 years and older\, please.

SUMMARY:National Tattoo Day
DESCRIPTION:July 17 is National Tattoo Day! Join us to learn about the history and cultural significance of tattooing\, and share the stories behind your own tattoos! \n\n\n\nTattooing has been a part of human cultural expression for over 5\,000 years – the first known tattooed person is Ötzi\, the Iceman\, whose mummified remains were discovered in the Alps in 1991 (Ötzi had sixty-one individual tattoos!). Tattoos have been used in rites of passage\, as marks of bravery and accomplishment\, and as protective religious talismans. In the twentieth century\, tattoos have been associated with sailors\, prisoners\, and gang members; today tattoos are so mainstream that almost everyone knows someone with some ink. \n\n\n\nJoin artist Tony Frank of Infinite Image Tattoo Studio and photographer Mark Perrott\, author of Tattoo Witness\, as they discuss this unique field of art. Afterwards\, we invite attendees to share a few words about the personal meaning behind your own tattoos! If you would like to speak\, please indicate that when you register. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but not required for attendees who do not wish to speak. If you do wish to speak\, registration is required. Please click here to register! \n\n\n\nInterested in speaking? We ask that each speaker keep your comments to around five minutes or less. Please ensure that your story is PG-13 rated or lower. If the tattoo you wish to share is on a part of your body normally covered by clothing\, you may bring a photograph to share (no nudity in the photo\, please).

SUMMARY:Certifying Your Property Pollinator Friendly!
DESCRIPTION:Pollinators need our help! Both native bees and domestic bee populations are declining\, affected by habitat loss\, disease and contact with pesticides. \n\n\n\nPenn State Extension Master Gardeners are taking action to protect pollinators by planting pollinator friendly gardens and providing education for the gardening public. You can join this effort by providing food and habitat for native insects/animals. Pollinators will\, in turn\, provide the pollination needed to protect our plant diversity and food sources. \n\n\n\nCertifying your property as “Pollinator Friendly” will help support a healthy ecosystem for our community and our future. This presentation with Master Gardener Chris VandenBosche will cover all of the reasons and steps necessary to apply for this important certification. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome.
