SUMMARY:Chernobyl 40 Years Later: A Day of Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:On April 26\, 1986\, an explosion shook the Chernobyl nuclear power plant near Pripyat\, Ukraine. Since that moment\, the lasting effects of the disaster have defined existence in the region\, with most people evacuating and many thousands sickened by the radiation of the worst nuclear disaster to date.  \n\n\n\nToday\, we gather for a day of commemoration marking the fortieth anniversary of this tragedy. Join us for poetry\, art\, dance\, stories from affected individuals\, and an expert panel discussion on the four decades since. \n\n\n\nSchedule of Events \n\n\n\n\n11:00 AM: Screening of The Babushkas of Chernobyl (2015)\, dir. Anne Bogart & Holly Morris\n\n\n\n12:30 PM: Screening and discussion of Chernobyl: 30 Years Later by Michael Haritan\n\n\n\n1:00 PM: Kyiv Ukrainian Dance Ensemble performs an original dance based on Michael Haritan’s photograph Gasmask Doll\n\n\n\n1:30 PM: Musical performance by Ridna Shkola children’s choir\n\n\n\n1:40 PM: Panel discussion on the disaster’s effects on health\, radiology\, geopolitics\, and culture\, featuring:\n\nDr Yuri Nikiforov\, vice chair of the Department of Pathology and director of the Division of Molecular Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine\n\n\n\nDr Steven Miner\, an expert on Russian and Eastern European history from Ohio University\n\n\n\nDarius Allman\, a Fire/HAZMAT Lieutenant and the Radiological Officer for the City of Pittsburgh\n\n\n\nOlya Feldberg\, a researcher whose work focuses on the role of the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine-Russian relations and Russian politics\n\n\n\n\n\n2:30 PM: Discussion of the environmental recovery of the Chernobyl area\n\n\n\n\nThroughout the event\, attendees are invited to view photographs of the Chernobyl area by Michael Haritan accompanied by original poetry written by students at Carlow University; sample treats from our bake sale; and construct a LEGO scale model of Chernobyl’s Reactor #4 (a completed set of the model will go to one raffle winner). \n\n\n\nTraffic note: The NFL draft is taking place in Pittsburgh from April 23 through April 26. Traffic will be much heavier than normal\, and a number of Pittsburgh roads will be closed (click here for full road closure information). DESCRIPTION:Join certified yoga instructor Leah Shuck for a gentle\, slower flow yoga practice every second and fourth Monday evening! \n\n\n\nMindful yoga is a rewarding way to exercise while reducing stress and centering your mind. Please bring a yoga mat\, a bottle of water\, and something to use as a strap (an old scarf\, belt\, or necktie work just fine!). You are also welcome to bring a block\, blanket\, bolster\, etc if you wish. If you don’t have a yoga mat\, we have a few available to borrow. \n\n\n\nThis is a pay-what-you-can class where participants can pay $0-$15\, with a suggested donation of $10 per class.
