SUMMARY:"A Burning Hunger": Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising\, with Lynda Schuster
DESCRIPTION:When the students of Soweto\, South Africa rose up in 1976 to protest apartheid\, they were led by the charismatic young Tsietsi Mashinini. Scores of students were shot down and hundreds were injured. Tsietsi’s actions on that day set in motion a chain of events that would forever change South Africa\, define his family\, and transform their lives. As the anti-apartheid movement continued to grow\, the Mashinini family became immersed in almost every facet of the liberation struggle—from guerrilla warfare to urban insurrection. \n\n\n\nTonight\, acclaimed journalist and author Lynda Schuster reflects on the fiftieth anniversary of the Soweto Uprising and courage and strength of the Mashinini family\, the other students who rose up\, and the countless Black South Africans whose struggle against an oppressive system led to a historic transformation. \n\n\n\nCopies of Lynda’s book A Burning Hunger: One Family’s Struggle against Apartheid (originally published in 2004\, and reissued to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Soweto Uprising) will be available for purchase courtesy of Woolly Bear Books & Gifts. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. Please click here to register!
