SUMMARY:The Pittsburgh Savoyards present Iolanthe
DESCRIPTION:October 13 – 22\, 2023Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm | Sundays at 2:30 pmGilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe (originally produced in 1882) presents a conflict between two very different worlds. On the one hand\, we have the world of the immortal fairies – all female\, somewhat trippy and chaotic\, and ruled by a queen; on the other\, we have the world of British parliamentary peers – all male\, stodgy and precise\, and subject to the law as interpreted by the Lord Chancellor. The opera presents a political satire wrapped around a love story: the fairy Iolanthe’s half human son Strephon loves the Lord Chancellor’s ward Phyllis\, but the Lord Chancellor wishes to marry her to a peer. The fairies come to Strephon’s aid\, install him in parliament\, and cast a spell on the other members of parliament to make them pass any law Strephon proposes. The plot winds up as you’d expect\, with the lovers reunited. Along the way\, we get any number of satirical digs at the British system of law and government.Music Director – Guy RussoStage Director – Michael McFaden \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

SUMMARY:The Fruits of Hate: A French City During the Holocaust - Gallery talk and reception
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Rosenberg’s exhibit “The Fruits of Hate: A French City During the Holocaust” is open for its premiere exhibition at a public library in the United States from October 2 through November 30. Following the stories of the Jewish residents of Amiens\, France during the Holocaust\, this exhibit delves into questions of official\, cultural\, and religious Jewish identity. The use of identification cards\, personal correspondence\, photos\, and audio recordings bring a compelling immediacy to the exhibit. \n\n\n\nTonight\, join Dr. Rosenberg and French-language majors from Grove City College to learn about the research behind this project\, the lives of its subjects\, and to hear new English translations of personal and official accounts of the roundup previously available only in French. \n\n\n\nIn January 2024 the city of Amiens will officially remember the 80th anniversary of the roundup and deportation to death camps of its Jewish citizens\, and Dr. Rosenberg’s exhibit will be on display in the city’s main public library. In Pittsburgh\, where the worst anti-semitic attack in American history occurred on October 27\, 2018\, remembering and engaging with the atrocities of the Holocaust finds an increased urgency and importance. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome. To register\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Virtual Museum Spotlight: David Bradford House & Whiskey Rebellion Education Center
DESCRIPTION:David Bradford was a successful lawyer\, businessman and Deputy Attorney General of Washington County. His home was an architectural showpiece of the time\, and the Bradford family lived in the house from 1788 to 1794. However\, their residence was cut short because of David’s leadership role in the Whiskey Rebellion\, an uprising of farmers and distillers in western Pennsylvania who opposed a whiskey tax enacted by the federal government. When 13\,000 troops were sent to end the protest\, David fled south to present-day Louisiana to avoid being arrested. \n\n\n\nAt this virtual program\, Board President and Education Committee Member Denise Cummins will delve into David Bradford’s background and highlight the history of the site\, including what you may see during your visit. Following the presentation\, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more! Registration is required. Click here to register! \n\n\n\nThis virtual program is part of a series promoting the Experience Kits initiative at select public libraries and is sponsored by the Heinz Center Affiliates Program (HCAP). With your library card\, receive free admission passes for up to four people to several local museums and historical sites. Learn more here!

Earlier that morning\, November 19\, at least three eyewitnesses recalled that the president toured the battlefield\, including a personal guard\, a foreign ambassador\, and United States Secretary of State William Seward. He has been part of the Seminary Ridge Museum & Education Center staff since before the institution’s opening. Prior to his current role as Director of Education and Museum Operations\, he previously served as Communications Intern\, Visitor Services Coordinator\, and Operations Manager. In addition to Museum tours and interpretation\, he lectures for National Park Service sites\, historical societies\, Civil War roundtables\, educational groups\, and other organizations. He has published articles and essays in local newspapers\, regional magazines\, and national history journals. Codie is a founding contributor to Pennsylvania in the Civil War\, writes book reviews for Civil War Monitor\, and serves on the Gettysburg Magazine editorial board. \n\n\n\n2nd Saturday Lectures made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust
