SUMMARY:"The Day the Klan Came to Town": A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:On August 25\, 1923\, thousands of members of the Ku Klux Klan descended upon Carnegie in a show of force and intimidation. The night of chaos and violence that followed would leave its marks in the memory of Carnegie’s residents for many years to come. \n\n\n\nTonight\, we mark the 100th anniversary of the day that Carnegie stood up to the Klan\, driving them out of the Borough and weakening their influence in Western Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\nJoin members of the Heinz History Center\, the Carnegie Historical Society\, and the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall\, as well as author Bill Campbell and artist Bizhan Khodabandeh of the graphic novel The Day the Klan Came to Town (PM Press\, 2021) for a moderated panel discussion exploring the events of that day\, the research that went into creating the book\, and what we can learn today from the resistance of ordinary people in Carnegie a century ago. \n\n\n\nA reception with the panelists follows the program. Refreshments courtesy of State Representative Anita Astorino Kulik \n\n\n\nThis is a ticketed event and seats are limited! Please register to attend: \n\n\n\n\nStudents: Free admission. Click here to register.\n\n\n\nNon-students: $10. Click here to reserve your tickets.\n\n\n\n\nPlus\, don’t miss our “Embracing Our Differences” book discussion of The Day the Klan Came to Town\, on August 15!

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: American Citizen: The Civil War Writings of Capt. George A. Brooks\, 46th Pennsylvania Infantry\, with Benjamin E. Myers
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH \n\n\n\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie No Account Required! Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279 Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\nIn the spring of 1861\, America was pulling apart at the seams and George Brooks’ life was in shambles. Destitute and reeling from a failed business venture and familial disagreement following a turbulent love affair\, Brooks spent the years before the Civil War traveling in search of work. His wife and young son\, of whom he saw little\, remained at home in Harrisburg\, PA. When war broke out\, soldiering offered the first steady job he had held in years. \n\n\n\nSent off to war as a scourge to his family instead of a hero\, Brooks became captain of Company D\, 46th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He soon proved an admirable leader and recruiter\, writing to his hometown paper in patriotic prose about his wartime experiences. Brooks chronicled his regiment’s pursuit of Stonewall Jackson in Northern Virginia in 1862\, during which the Union suffered a series of devastating losses\, as well as “seeing the elephant” at First Winchester\, Cedar Mountain\, and Antietam. American Citizen combines Brooks’ personal diary\, newspaper articles\, and personal correspondence to tell the story of a young man trying to balance a life left behind while leading a company of soldiers through some of the Civil War’s most studied campaigns.Benjamin E. Myers was born and raised just outside Harrisburg\, PA\, where an interest in local and family Civil War history found him at a young age. His research on the 46th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry has appeared in Civil War Times and Military Images magazines. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from American University and works as a web designer and developer in Washington\, DC. American Citizen: The Civil War Writings of Captain George A. Brooks\, 46th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry\, is his first book.

SUMMARY:'Would That: Transmutation\, Transformation\, and Tracing the Lines of Possibility': An evening with poet Diana Khoi Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:Join poet and multimedia artist Diana Khoi Nguyen for a talk about life\, grief\, and poetry as a way of being in the world. Diana will share the video and poetry work she has created since the death of her brother\, and discuss its evolution as her grief has progressed with time. \n\n\n\nDiana writes: \n\n\n\n“Would That is a project which includes poetry\, drama\, and multimedia work (videos\, site installations)\, where the impulse for discovery stems from thinking about subjunctive possibility (hence ‘Would That’)\, a verb mood not existent in the Vietnamese language. In material practice\, I return to archives: family photographs and videos\, but also the archive of my parents (their family photographs and videos). These returns are recurring\, like a strand woven back and forth across the warp of a tapestry. I’m interested in documenting and finding documentation of resilience and resistance between/along generations of a Vietnamese American family (in this case\, my own).” \n\n\n\nDiana Khoi Nguyen was born and raised in California. She is the author of the chaplet Unless (Belladonna*\, 2019) and debut poetry collection\, Ghost Of (Omnidawn Publishing\, 2018). Her forthcoming second collection of poems will be published by Scribner in 2024. Currently\, she teaches creative writing at Randolph College Low-Residency MFA and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, though walk-ins are welcome. SUMMARY:The Pittsburgh Savoyards present Iolanthe
DESCRIPTION:October 13 – 22\, 2023Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm | Sundays at 2:30 pmGilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe (originally produced in 1882) presents a conflict between two very different worlds. On the one hand\, we have the world of the immortal fairies – all female\, somewhat trippy and chaotic\, and ruled by a queen; on the other\, we have the world of British parliamentary peers – all male\, stodgy and precise\, and subject to the law as interpreted by the Lord Chancellor. The opera presents a political satire wrapped around a love story: the fairy Iolanthe’s half human son Strephon loves the Lord Chancellor’s ward Phyllis\, but the Lord Chancellor wishes to marry her to a peer. The fairies come to Strephon’s aid\, install him in parliament\, and cast a spell on the other members of parliament to make them pass any law Strephon proposes. The plot winds up as you’d expect\, with the lovers reunited. Along the way\, we get any number of satirical digs at the British system of law and government.Music Director – Guy RussoStage Director – Michael McFaden \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS
