SUMMARY:Listen Locally with Resonance Works "To Breathe Free"
DESCRIPTION:To Breathe Free explores the twin themes of remembrance and possibility with a reprise of Copland’s vibrant Appalachian Spring\, poignant works by Pulitzer prize-winners Caroline Shaw and George Walker\, and a world premiere by Gilda Lyons celebrating Resonance Works’ 10th anniversary. The Resonance Chamber Orchestra takes the spotlight for Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring\, which hums with the optimism and possibility of building a new life\, but also the trepidation of facing an uncertain future. Caroline Shaw’s ethereal To the Hands for choir and strings meditates on empathy and refuge\, inspired by 17th century Danish composer Dietrich Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu nostri.  Gilda Lyons’ An Anchor in Time looks back to poetry and text of the past and ponders the future through the words of children.  Two performances in Bloomfield and Carnegie feature mezzo-soprano Timothi Williams\, baritone Daniel Teadt\, the Resonance Chamber Orchestra and Festival Chorus\, led by conductor Maria Sensi Sellner.  ACFL&MH is pleased to partner with Resonance Works during its tenth anniversary\, including this exciting program as part of the Listen Locally series performed in the Music Hall. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Civil War Series: Civilian Stories of the Battle of Gettysburg with Evan Portman
DESCRIPTION:In Person in the Lincoln Gallery at ACFL&MH \n\n\n\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie No Account Required!Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9370579279 Meeting ID: 937 057 9279 \n\n\n\nWhile Union and Confederate armies engaged one another on the bloody fields of Gettysburg\, the civilians of the town had a front row seat to one of the momentous events in American history. But in many ways\, the civilian experience of the battle was less a front row seat and more an active role. Much like the soldiers and generals\, the civilians helped shape the outcome of the battle in their own indelible ways. From John Burns to Sarah Broadhead\, nearly every Gettysburg resident was touched by the battle and contributed to its legacy. Those three fateful days in July 1863 would change their lives and their community forever. \n\n\n\nEvan Portman is a fledgling historian from Export\, Pennsylvania. He is currently an intern with the American Battlefield Trust as well as a continuing education instructor with the Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission. Evan is also a guest contributor of Emerging Civil War and has his own channel on Youtube dedicated to exploring lesser known sites and of the Battle of Gettysburg. A recent graduate of Saint Vincent College\, he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in history at Duquesne University.

SUMMARY:Revisiting Pittsburgh's Orphanages: An author visit
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1900s\, orphanages in the United States housed more than 100\,000 children\, thousands of those living in Pittsburgh. The research for this rich history is shared through a mosaic of images in the new book: Pittsburgh’s Orphans and Orphanages\, showing the many buildings that gave young orphans a place to call home for decades. Their stories remain an important piece of Pittsburgh’s history. \n\n\n\nAuthors Joann Cantrell and James Wudarczyk will discuss their book and the research done on the orphanages in the Pittsburgh region. Joann Cantrell is an award-winning local journalist and author of three books for the Arcadia Publishing Images of America series that celebrates the history of neighborhoods\, towns and cities across the country. She has also authored a book on infant loss: Carried Within Me – Echoes of Infant Loss published by Lighthouse Point Press\, Pittsburgh. James Wudarczyk is a local historian and long time member of the Lawrenceville Historical Society\, as well as the author of two of Arcadia’s Images of America series and numerous history books. \n\n\n\nRegistration is appreciated\, but walk-ins are welcome.
