SUMMARY:Sophie - The Incomparable Mayor Masloff
DESCRIPTION:Sophie – The Incomparable Mayor Masloff\nA virtual book talk with author\, Barbara Burstin\nWednesday\, July 15\, 2020\n7:00pm \nRegister Here \nDo you remember Sophie Masloff?  Do you miss her?  Even if you never knew her\, you might enjoy getting to know about the incomparable Mayor Masloff with author\, Dr. Barbara Burstin. Sophie Masloff became the first woman and the first Jewish mayor of Pittsburgh in 1988\, upon the untimely death of the popular Mayor\, Dick Caliguiri.  Often dismissed and belittled\, the feisty senior citizen showed her toughness when she won a four-year term as mayor in her own right. It wasn’t easy\, but she kept Pittsburgh moving forward during difficult economic times. \nPlease join us as Dr. Barbara Burstin discusses her 2019 biography which takes a look at the life of Sophie Masloff – her triumphs and her tribulations. \nJoin us on Zoom or Facebook Live. \nPurchase your own copy of the book here. \nAbout the Author \nAs a faculty member of both the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University\, Dr. Barbara Burstin has taught a number of courses on America and the Holocaust\, the American Jewish community\, and Pittsburgh history. She has authored three other books on the history of the Pittsburgh Jewish Community\, all available on her website\, and produced the documentary “A Jewish Legacy: Pittsburgh” now on DVD. Her most recent book\, Sophie – The Incomparable Mayor Masloff\, is based on news reports\, archival material and nearly seventy interviews with members of her administration collected over several years of research.  \nThe Woman’s Hour\nAs 2020 marks the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, we commemorate this milestone with programs featuring women in a series we call The Woman’s Hour. Please visit our website for more Woman’s Hour programming.
