SUMMARY:Second Saturday Civil War Series
DESCRIPTION:From Fact to Fiction: Writing Historical Novels\nSpeaker: Ruth Ochs Webster\nSaturday\, January 9\, 2021  |  1:00 PM Online \nwww.facebook.com/CarnegieCarnegie. No account is required. Or join us on Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85339375533\nMeeting ID: 853 3937 5533 \nRuth Webster brings the War in Kentucky to life in a series of historical novels.  Research into her family’s past led to envisioning the events of her ruptured native state through the wartime experiences of the men and women who lived it. \nCousins at War follows four young men (brothers and first cousins) through the turbulent years of 1861-65. They are forced to choose sides in a divided State which is raging around them. Family ties will rupture\, loyalties be thrown into question. And only two will live to grow old. \nThey served in the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry\, the 10th Kentucky Cavalry USA\, the 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry USA\, and the 8th Kentucky Cavalry CSA. \nJesse: 53rd Kentucky\, is the story of nineteen-year-old Corporal Jesse J. Cook\, who rides with Union General George Stoneman on the first of his raids into Virginia in 1864\, meeting his fate at Saltville. \nRuth will share the facts behind the fiction—military records from the National Archives\, regimental reports\, historical newspaper accounts\, genealogical research\, non-fiction works\, and first person accounts—and how she weaves it all into stories which educate as they entertain. \nRuth Ochs Webster was born and raised in Covington\, Kentucky. The location sparked a lifelong interest in history and travel. She is a retired National Board-Certified Teacher having specialized in social studies and language arts. Her teaching career spanned 25 years. Ruth has been published in various print media over many decades.  Recent awards include The Author Zone—First Place Historical Fiction\, 2020—and the Kentucky Monthly Magazine’s 2020 Literary Award for Novel Opening. \n2nd Saturday Lectures made possible by the Massey Charitable Trust\nRegistration not required. Free and open to the public.
